ok what format does everyone think the video footage should be in ?

[quote]
mpeg 2
[quote]
real player rm, ram
or windows media player
[quote]
i've always been found of quicktime, plus it's not a disadvantage to all those MAC users.

[quote]
divx
[quote]
mpeg2? *laughs* No fucking way!

DivX / mpeg4 all the way. Or wmv, which I think is an mpeg4 variation, by my understanding.

But not rm - rm sucks for video footage if you ask me ... and quicktime has an ugly player you can't fullscreen properly. Grrr.

But yeah, put it in multiple formats? And get someone good to DivX it for us geeks. Razz

Windows Media Player
[quote]
ok maybe another question ..... how many people use MAC's ???
[quote]
or Linux ?
[quote]
DivX

-high compression
-high quality
-available for Windows, Linux & Mac (OpenDivX)
-can use it with almost any player you want so you're not stuck with an ugly/useless/bloatware player (like Realplayer or Quicktime)
[quote]
mpeg .... unless your doing full dvd movie rips i wouldn't bother with divx
[quote]
just a question .... how many people actually run DivX ... I know alot of us do ... but ppl at work stuck on windows NT 4 can only run .MPG, .MOV, .AVI, and if they have "the latested" windows media player 6.4 for winNT4 then itll run WMV ..
[quote]
we can pretty much use any format at work...
[quote]
DIVX!!! if you dont have divx yet, go to www.divx.com and get it now!
[quote]
-DivX
Pro: small file size good quality
Cons: not user friendly
-Mpeg1
Pro: smallish file size, player widely available
Cons: larger than DivX
-AVI
Pro: everyone can play it
Cons: Massive file size
-MS's DivX
Pro: small file size good quality, player can be downloaded from Microsoft
Cons: I belive $$$ is required for the encoding software from Microsoft. (pays to check it out, I might be wrong)

320x240 quicktime - sorenson codec
ideally 3 compression sizes for those with
different connection speeds.
ie
100kb / sec
400kb / sec
700kb / sec

Sorenson is what all the film trailors are
compressed in. Great codec. The key is great
source footage though thus little degradation in
compression

Any widespread non nurdy format to enable as many biggies to watch as possible
[quote]
And not forgetting that most NZ connection speeds are bloody slow(mine included) I can`t get ADSL chez moi!
[quote]
Somethinf simple that most non IT buffs can use cos a large proportion is the general public.
[quote]
prob the easiest for others 2 use would be mpeg, this way no one has 2 worry bout downloading any other players or anything, just need windows media player
[quote]
cheers for the input... keep it coming...

just trying to get a feel for what people run ....

Cheers

Nah, mpeg(/mpeg2 or mpeg1) has terrible compression, you'll end up with massive file sizes and shitty grainy quality. Mpeg died about three years ago, imho.

DivX would be good, but probably 75% on hee don't know what a 'codec' is, let alone want to install a dodgy hacked codec like DivX which is far from standardised.

Still, making a high quality DivX version available would be good.

What about 'asf' guys? No-ones mentioned that. That works in WMP6.4 and has MPEG4 compression similar to DivX as far as I understand it. Not as good as DivX, but still usable. I expect the codec has been disabled for encoding however... I seem to remember VirtualDub telling me at some point that I couldn't encode to ASF as M$ didn't allow it.

Mike...

I run Darwin streaming server for QT, WM server
for WM & no longer bother at all with Real
Time... gave up Real about 3 years ago & have
yet to see it offer anthing over the other available
products.

Darwin is the best quaity by far! Using
Sorenson Video 3 codec which is standard with
QT5 Pro is the easiest way to create streaming
product (which we do for BMG, Fox, Chan'V...).

That is if you decide to do RTSP streaming... of
course progressive streaming is far more
accessible, cleaner & easier as a product. I still
advise QT. I can offer you a relay test if you want
to do some live stuff - just give me a yell...

Also... how about a MP3 radio??? I can give you
a Shoutcast Server which you could relay off &
also have several live mixes of Sasha, Judge
Jules, Tiesto, etc - all around 2 hour live cuts &
from all around the world...

yeah actually divx would be realy good.
