Fear and loathing...

or?
[quote]
I've never really had any experiences with the police but there are some that are just on such a power trip they are just absolute arseholes. Recently I have been really disillusioned about the police and the way their organissation operates as someone very close to me was in a serious car accident involving a drunk driver - but the drunk driver has close connections with the police facility that is doing the prosecution so I am not seeing the results i had hoped for.

My experiences with them have contradicted the standard "I hate pigs" attitude - but, regardless, they still scare the shit out of me!

I HATE power/authority!

oh damit i thought u where talking aboot the old NWA song oh well :-p

It is true that they are in a position of authority and ofcourse there are going to be that handful who abuse this. I have found that the mass will only give as good as they receive. There is nothing i hate more than seeing a bunch of drunken idiots giving unnecessary abuse to the police, what they get from then on is their fault.

hear hear! Exodus-You're on the money there.
I concede that there are avenues through the Police structure that are far less than perfect, indeed loopholes and corruption abound,as they do in any large organisation, but what it comes down to for joe public is the individual officer that you are dealing with at the time.
His/Her training has instructed her to deal with circumstances in a certain way-whether they choose to push these rules aside on the spot is based upon YOUR attitude towards them.
Life is short. Play hard.Be nice to Cops.Get to go home.

Me too Forest! I was gonna say "That song rocks!"

See, problem with cops is that they're not superhuman, they're just people with human frailties and the directive to enforce law and order. It doesn't mean they're immune to anger or jealousy or bigotry or corruption (although thats what we'd hope).

My personal experience of the police is that a lot of them are racist morons on a powertrip. My personal way of dealing with the police is to treat them with respect and don't do anything to provoke them, but stand your ground. They subscribe to the "Alpha Male" principle and if you act subservient, you're asking for trouble.

Nicely said Gav and Exodus, and the majority of police seem to be pretty cool, however i have seen some horrible things done to ppl by cops that didnt do anything to warrant anything happening to them at all. the police need to screen the staff they have a little better and get onto this whole standards thing they seem to be concerned with.

All that aside, i take my hat off to them. i wouldnt want to be a police officer.

Police have been pretty awesome in my experience, they have saved me from more than a few scary incidents Very Happy

I've had a fear few run ins with the coppers in my very short existence.

And apart from a few shitty experiences with some asshole coppers, by and large most of them have been pretty good, considering I was the one in the wrong in the first place. I was doing some sort of stupid shit obviously.

There are always exceptions but the way I see it is.
Treat the person with respect and you will get it back.

I've forgotten the amount of times I've done stupid shit and just backed down, said 'Yes Sir, No Sir would you like fries with that Sir' and gotten away with everything scott free.
[quote]
i say be nice to the cops, its the best way and you do end up better off.

Caz .. its hard to screen a person out for this job more than they do. A new cop is a little timmid to start with like any person at a new job, but after a while they will become harder to deal with. Thus be nice to them and they wont turn nasty.

It is good to see that the general view is the same regarding the NZ Police force. Like any institution there are going to be good guys and bad guys (guys and girls).

It all depends on how the pork has been processed!

Twinkle: Bad karma's on it's way to the corrupt police and that f@#king drunk. Promise.

Thanks frectaal I really hope so! It's eating away at me!

anyone still have the NWA song ? by any chance? huh hahaha

Cops are also very different in towns than they are in cities. Cops in towns have to get on with people and are usually much friendlier. In cities they deal on a more impersonal level. There is also a lot of institutionalised racism in the police. Where I used to work Maori had a very negative view of the police due to them and their friends being harrassed by police for no good reason. I was amazed by the difference between our experience of the cops.
[quote]
Yeah....cops in towns much better....them cops in Waitara.....nice blokes really....Razz (just givin u shit sweetie....everyone's fair game for me)
But yeah, generally speaking, the small town cops are more "human", maybe that's why they choose to work in small towns, not cities......the bigger the place, the bigger the wanker really....when it comes to cops.

I'd rather have them, than not.

So far cops have been good to me Smile
[quote]
we may hate them, but who do you call when your in trouble?? wish we could call batman.
[quote]
I've had some experiences with them, one being that they accused me of lying and treated me like shit when I had done nothing wrong, they finally found out I wasn't lying and just fucked off with out even appoligising or anything.
Most cops seem alright though.

Yeah, it's a bit circular really.

It's rational for the police to target groups that have higher crime rates e.g. gangs. This is often extended to youth, in particular drivers and unfortunately to Maori and polynesian groups. The sad fact is - there is a higher rate of crime among these groups, and so the police can reduce crime most by targetting these groups. A simple fact on the use of resources really.

Unfortunately, this becomes a problem when the 'targetting' gets extended to a personal level, and cops/police treat individual people as criminals and pre-judge them. Targetting is one thing, pre-judging and having an attitude towards one group is another.

I'm was one of the teen drivers continually harrassed by the cops for the car I drove, but I acceptted that this was needed, as teen males in Civics perform their fair share of dodgy antics on the roads, so it seems sensible for the cops to check them out.

There's a 'line' somewhere I think - when does 'targetting' become some form of prejudice?
