I miss the nice fish & chips from back home Sad

So you guys from the west, have you been to a f&c shop that even comes close to a good old NZ one? I'm in Ealing but will go as far as The Bush for a good feed of the greasy stuff.

Please help!

Laughing I never ate fish n chips in London but tried some once in a little village called Wigmore on the Welsh border and OMG, what RUBBISH!

the fish still had its skin on with batter ON TOP and the chips were worse than 2 week old Pizza Hutt chips!

and England go on how there fish n chips are the shit!!! ????
[quote]
They are the shit..!! have yo tried deep fried black pudding...?

David, the English guy at work, has been trying to tell me the FnC here is crap compared to UK FnC!. Too much salt on it he says, I said to him, " why don't you just ask for less, or no salt?" He was like, "oh yeah, I never thought of that. That would make it heaps better"
[quote]
I thought the english invented fish and chips.... Confused

how can they not be able to make a decent scoop of chips and some nicely battered fish, if they invented them!?!?!?!?

Right, I'm moving over to start my own franchise of Fish and chips stores... Kiwi Style!!!! Mr. Green
[quote]
YOu would get a huuuuuge following if you did. The fnC over there, really is shite! I have dreams of starting up my own Midnight Espresso cafe over there. I dreamt about it all the time when I was London, as the coffee was crap too.
[quote]
You would still be cooking with english food tho...

unless you imported NZ produce ????
[quote]
Same problem in Aussie. there's *some* alright ones, but have had so many AVERAGE servings. And they put in Paper boxes! not newpaper/newspaper-paper!

one good thing - most takeaways serve chips with Chicken-salt. love it!
[quote]
have you had mushy peas (those biggies in pommyland)???

i think they look like vomit but mum and dad swear they taste good... i don't believe them

but yea. pommy fush and chups is ARSE

In the UK they usually fry in vegetable oil because of the huge Hindu vegetarian population (apparently 15% of the UK is vege). NZ usually fries in artery blocking beef fat because it gives a crispier fry that you are all talking about.

When Burger King first arrived in NZ it used to fry in vege oil but had to change to beef fat to meet customer demand. NZ is one of the few countries where Mc D’s and BK cook in animal fat, in most other countries around the word these two companies strictly use vege oil. KFC uses palm oil (vege oil).
[quote]
mmm arterty clogging fat... soo gooooodddddd

might explain why so many kiwis are on the overweight side of average
[quote]
Ruthie - slimmer than the USA tho.

Canola oil is pretty common, but there's nothing that frys better than good ol Chefade!!! (god it looks gross - comes in 20 kg boxes.... one solid block of white lard)

When working at Wisconsin, we'd have people come in and check what the food was fried in. People wouldn't buy fries because of it too...
[quote]
OMG Wisconsin used animal fat... thats one I didnt check as I assumed it would be vege oil being at the "luxury" end of the burger market. Hmm, what about their vege burgers.... Im sure they had patties that needed to be deep fried... Maybe there is false advertising going on at Burger Wisconsin!!!!
[quote]
yep stu, the coffee is shit too.

is there just nothing that tastes alright over here at all?!

well, maybe the steak and ale pies Wink

mmmmm
[quote]
Wisconsin = used Canola oil for chicken and Vege patties etc.
but used chefade for their fries = better fries.

FYI Smile

Hey Spike,

Try Tony's on the corner of Horn Lane and Noel Road in West Acton. Went there last night, fish was massive biggest piece of fish I have seen!) but average tasting, but the chips were mint!! I had the flatties scrounging for the last crumb!

D Smile
[quote]
nice one dom. will check it out sometime. Smile

what is it about the fish over here still having a lot of the skin STILL ON under the batter?! isnt that just the grossest thing? and why are they so exspensive for something that tasts like an old train drivers shoe?!

The biggest difference in Fish and Chips over here is that they don't cook them for you on demand. Either the fish or the chips or both sit for-fucking-ever in "warming" trays that make them soggy and horrible.

I was living in Herne Hill for a while which is only famous for a F&C place that apparently is the best in London. It was crap. They cooked your fish for you - but the chips still came from the warming tray. And one fish and a scoop cost £8. And they didn't put salt on it at all.

Yeah - and they use diff oil and fish. Why - o why - on an island smaller than NZ - can you not get nice, fresh fish?

Yes I'm bitter. One of my flatmates just went home for 2 weeks and had nice food the WHOLE time. Sad
[quote]
in USA everything is deep fried in chef ade... or worse Very Happy
[quote]
One thing that some F and C places do is re-fry already cooked chips to warm them. Which isn't too bad (rather that than have them sit in a warming tray.)

But skin on? huh? I guess they're not using Flake (shark) which is the most common Fish for F and C. Skin on for that would be pretty tough I'd imagine. What sorta fish they serving.

What I wouldn't give for a serving of Snapper and chips from the Fish Pot Cafe in Mission Bay. Mad
[quote]
mmm the best chips are from the skakespeare rd F&C shop near westlake girls...... yum yum
[quote]
OMG Ruthie, I used to live near the shakespear F&C shop!!! I haven't had F&C from there for 3 years...

*lollies is now on a mission!!!*
[quote]
i stopped there the other day just to get the chips.... fat ass Very Happy

but SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO good!
