First of all it's called "association football", from which 19th century Englishmen, as was their wont, developed the term "soccer."

If you want to say "Association Football", then by all means, do so.

It was called football long before the FA came into being.

respect for who? the fans when the star striker takes a dive in the penalty box? or the ref when the players corner him and yell at him when they don't agree with a decision? or the game in general when two sides are happy for a draw so they both play uber defensive (which is at least half the time)?
