Watching the Ashes, and thinking back, I can't help but think captains always set poor fields to tailenders

(for fastbowlers)

First - PUT A THIRD MAN IN! They will nick a lot. And don't let them get 4 for it.

Second - don't use a mid on or midwicket. They won't be on driving or tucking you off your pads. They're tailenders. A mid off, maybe, but even that's probably silly.

Anyway my field to a tailender would be:

Third man, fine leg, 3 slips, 2 gullies (one a fly slip/deep gully), point, square leg

Jimmy Anderson would spit on your field...

agree somewhat on the 3rd man thing, I remember Flem used to be very slow to plug this gap

+ To tail enders I would nearly always include a silly shortleg/mid on for the rib ticklers

Tailenders these days are just not as useless as they use to be. Todays game requires everyone in the team to be able to use a bat.

However fully agree with your 3rd man and perhaps only 2 slips.

I remember a few years agop losing an ODI to Aussie when their 11 was facing needing 3 from 2 balls. First ball he nicks down to 3rd man for 4... Sad
