MP Taito Phillip Field .... in court on the well known bribery, corruption and perversion of justice charges.

Yesterday a Thai would-be migrant who was served with removal orders gave evidence that she was offered a place to stay in one of his houses... which she plastered and repainted for no pay.

It's probably not illegal in any way but he also told her to "get married" if she wanted to stay.. I imagine the sort of advice that the law didn't intended for immigration advisers to be giving people. Let alone MPs.

What do you think? Has be bee the victim of his own generosity or is a he deluded and been caught out being shonky?

I'm genuinely unsure - one side of me says as a South Auckland MP he is probably used to telling people how to make use of the system and helping people out.
Another side of me says the cops found evidence of bribery and corruption so it must be a bit more than that...

you have an unhealthy obsession with mr field Rob

I wish this case was over, though somehow I believe the verdict will only start a whole new phase

You think? I am really astounded that, with so much fire happening around him, he wasn't obliged to stand aside from his parliamentary role until it was sorted. It's one thing being innocent until found guilty, but it's another admitting being party to events which most laypeople could see were unnatural arrangements open to serious abuses of power/influence. For putting himself in that position alone he should have walked.

I'm happy we're back onto this actually - the whole Owen Glenn donation thing and NZ First's usual crap recently have given Field too much breathing space imo. I doubt he'll keep his job no matter the outcome of the case - the ever growing list of accusations is making him a worse burden than the tennis ball in the mouth guy.

I'm 95% certain Labour has turfed him already - pretty sure he is standing as an independent in Manukau

I'm 99.8% sure you're right there Gareth

which is possibly why its no longer super big news Rob - ie his shit doesn't really taint the govt as it could if he was being supoorted by the party etc.

there are more worthy proponents of fraud in this country than field to do the witch hunt on Rob - might you take a look at the many finance companies gone down... a bit more than someone plastering a wall for free

No, I think this is a very valid case to be following closely - our almost complete lack of political corruption is a virtue, and when it possibly starts off down a road like this it needs to be stamped out, if for the sake of image alone.

OMG... Rod... I think, after essentially wiping out so many people's life savings, whether dogily or not, surely one of those people will be annoyed enough and crazy enough to smack him in? With that many people it's bound to be likely at some stage.

Difference being Field is an MP and is in total denial. Finance company ppl for all we know do know they screwed up. I think I enjoy the news on him because it's relatively simple and public - which most of the finance company dealings aren't - he's an easy target. Almost an entertaining target in some ways.

I was batting for the Berryman's and their collapsed bridge case too.. but the good guys seem to have lost that one.

Bob.. and for those who think this isn't such an important case... Two witnesses yesterday told the court they lied to the Ingram Inquiry at the request of Field. One of them did so after a meeting with Field in a Burger King car park.

Field turned up at her house after her interview with Ingram and gave her a cheque for $700.

Of Field's offer to let an immigrant stay at his house in Samoa.... he had said his offer was made "because he was a Christian."

I'm starting to think jail time is becoming possibly outcome of this case now. And there's still months to go.

I didn't say it was an unimportant case... a boring one yes, as I wonder if anyone other than Feild thinks he's innocent...

Oh good. I thought you might have been shocked they went to Burger King instead of the nice little Thai restaurant a few doors along.
