Thought this was slightly differentv than the movie review one

If you watch TED chuck up a favourite talk you've seen. I really like this one:

http://www.ted.com/talks/lang/en/sam_richards_a_radical_experiment_in_empathy.html

If you haven't really checked out TED before there's some great talks there.

Interesting article ... I have noticed that TED doesn't really extend itself too much with subject matter like income disparity caused by political motivation etc

Isn't thie article more talking about actual TED conferences (in relation to the "money-soaked orgy of self-congratulatory futurism"Wink rather than the screening of the talks themselves?

I think it's offering a lot of people access to talks and opinions that they wouldn't otherwise see ....

At any rate, even if the lectures themslves are "•Drastically oversimplified explanations of complex problems." it speaks of the possibility of a different world where maybe an alternative and more positive reality is attainable.

It's a fair call on the lack of focus on the social justice side of the issues that are discussed though ...

I've not bothered with TED talks due to those whom recommend them to me - ie no one whose opinion I really respect has ever sent me a ted talk link but dozens of self help book reading types do

I've never bothered with them. Too much back slapping and scaremongering IMO.

Not saying they're always wrong, but I prefer to let other people watch, assess the information, then filter it and say whether its worthy of attention.

What kind of screamongering are you referrng to Split?

What's your take on this? http://www.ted.com/talks/lang/en/sam_richards_a_radical_experiment_in_empathy.html

I thought it was pretty well done and presented well.

I didn't bother watching all of it. I flicked through it. There's nothing new there. I find it pretty easy to empathise with almost anyone in the world.

So you've not watched any of Hans Rosling's several talks then? Because his entire bit is boiling down global income disparity into incredibly simplified concepts via the use of impressive data analysis and presentation techniques. Because that's exactly what's needed to illustrate the issues caused by poverty in poor nations.

http://www.ted.com/speakers/hans_rosling.html

Probably start with:
http://www.ted.com/talks/hans_rosling_shows_the_best_stats_you_ve_ever_seen.html
http://www.ted.com/talks/hans_rosling_reveals_new_insights_on_poverty.html

Father Ted reference notwithstanding, this seems incredibly stupid.

What? This is even more stupid than bobby d. The topics speakers cover are so wide and varied there's absolutely no way you can just write them off as "back slapping and scaremongering".

^^ this, TED is fkn awesome. Will post some of my faves tonight

I believe I speak for more than one of us when I ask, what the f**k is this all about then?

Agree that some topics get horribly simplified in these talks but they're made for a general audience ffs.

I suppose the haters have never touched a popular science book in their lives and get all their knowledge from The Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences? Embarassed
