me personally, i haven't heard much of there shit, apparently its pretty poppy. i'm not really gonna comment cos i went to school with two of em and know them pretty well. i know they put in heaps of effort, but you carnt expect anything to "street" from a bunch a kids who lets say, "grew up in rather affluent neighbourhoods"

Yep but rapping is just one aspect of hip-hop. Sure it did start off simple cuz it was just an accessible form of self expression (even for those without "better education" or a "better vocab". At the same time though, there's always been an underlying subculture thats reflected important issues of the time, whether they be political, social or economic.

All I'm saying is that so far, I haven't heard any of that influence from Fast Crew. But who knows, maybe they're just starting off simple too.

No one ever said anything about having to have a message in your lyrics to "qualify" as hip hop - that's a ridiculous concept. Isn't it more about truth and expression?

For your information I'm certainly making an informed judgment as I have only ever seen them live. Not sure if I've heard the single (live or otherwise) and don't have a tv so definitely haven't seen the vid.

In any event, my "informed judgment" is based on the fact that in my view their lyrics are empty and pretentious, and their production amateur. Sure they're having a great time and if they're workin hard at it then of course they deserve respect for that, I don't deny it.

All I'm saying is they're not my cuppa tea.

I agree with micellos "starting simple" comment. The production is mostly not to the standard i would enjoy, but already the newer tunes have more sonic depth than the very basic first songs.

The Beastie Boys Licensed to Ill also recieved "souless white boy" comments when it came out - i think this similar assosiation will prove to be good for the FC in the future.

i think the FC are coming from a totally different angle from the beastie boys, the beastie boys were comin from a piss take punk rock angle (thus the dissin originally cos licensed to ill was a bit of a joke), were as the FC are stright up west coast dr dre fanatics, they take it real serious (unlike the beasties), which is prehaps a bit much for some to swallow.

i know jeremy real well and i know just how serious he takes it. i know him well enuf to know that his surname seems to abreviated on their press releases! hahaha. i ain't dissin, just sayin theyr pretty serious. i've been outta the country for the past 4 months so i'm not up with the play on any new tracks...

Probably the "bad vibes on hiphopnz" to Fast Crew were basically because they are pretty wack.

Music should never be judged upon sexuality, race, gender, whatever. So what if they're from Remuera and mom and dad paid for their setup ==> this is just an example, im not sure if they are or not.

My point, i've seen them twice down @ FU last year. I didnt like them, they were whack. Big ups to Sirvere for helping them out one night when their dj didnt turn up. What a top bloke!

their beats are pretty tight, if theres one thing they are experienced in is making good beats (jeremy the one who also does there production is a bit of a cubase master from all reports), i know hes a huge dr dre fan.
they arn't that young either... well older than most people that use these message boards, and ruffly the same age as all the other nz mcs making waves at the moment, so that point ain't valid unfortunatly samsara, however i am not defending them. i ain't feelin there shit as a package, as far as i'm concerned they have made their rep as a live act thru their fu connections and are strugglin to take that into the domain of recording, plus the nz hiphop community arn't feelin them either so they will always struggle outside of fu IMO.

all i know is when fast crew play, there is always about 100 of the hottest well dressed young ladies in town coming to dance for them....aint nothing wrong with that cred heh.

Personally , im not going to rush out and by there album. Lyrically I think there stuffs abit like that "new kids on the block had a bunch of hits" tip. In saying that the beat to that Mr Raido is kinda catchy I had the hook stuck in my head for a couple of days.

Good on them for getting out there and doing something I say. As to how 'hiphop' they are it's a bit of a mute point , diversity is what makes hiphop culture so great.

The lasts two events I've seen the Fast Crew at, they're were wicked!Maybe not everyone's cup of tea, but the 2000 odd people bouncing to their tunes at the Big Day Out certainly were enjoying it. Saw them at the Xair games on Saturday, all I can say is WICKED!!
