Knocked over my External Hard Drive, it still turn on, but computer doesn't seem to find it and it makes a whurr sound plus a beep, guessing I may of put the disc out of alignment maybe??

it's a Iomega 500GB USB 2.0 Desktop Hard Drive, had it just over a year, so will be out of warrenty... is it screwed?

Just buy a new one and do that freezer trick?? does that actually work?? Don't care so much about movies, more the music.

Sad

Can you take the hard disc out of the external case and put it into a PC directly, or maybe source another external case to test it in? Maybe you'll be lucky and it's not the hard disc that is bung.

freezer trick works but probably not in this case and you usually only get a small amount of time to copy stuff off (I use scripts to repeatedly try to grab the files in order of importance).

Well as long as theres no horrible clicking sound.

You probably wanna figure out what type of drive it contains. I presume the fact that its called a 'desktop hard drive' means it has its own power supply which means it'll be a 3.5" drive and based on the age I'd suggest it'll be a SATA drive. If so, like Harv says you'll probably be able to put it straight into a desktop pc which would be my first port of call, to figure out if its the enclosure or the drive itself.

Have you opened it up and checked for signs of physical damage yet? With a bit of luck it'll be the enclosure or the plugs inside came loose or something.

Yeah take it to the work tech, its a one minute job for someone like that to plug it into a pc and see if it goes.

Yeah, worth a go, but prepare for the worst.

Funny, just had a discussion with Bob just the other day, and this is one of the prime reasons I hate external drives. Too damn easy to kill.

PD: Funnily enough, you'd be surprised, a lot of the desktop drives from the big manufacturers are still IDE, it's a good way for them to dump old stock.

Edit: Or at least were up to a year or so ago.

Tech put it in a computer, Information was unrecoverable...I can live without my TV shows, and lucky I have 95% of my music in my CD wallet, will be an crazy job re-backing it up back onto new drive!

Oh and work had a spare drive, so tech just swapped it Smile
