err hopefully no one minds me posting this, but it's doing my head in.

I have a spreadsheet where most of the figures are in thousands but then I started directly copying the data from another spreadsheet which is just single numbers and I need to change it to thousands.

thought it would be easy.

NOT Sad

If anyone knows how I would appreciate that, I have tried a formula and also tried the custom formatting #,### it didn't work

=cell ref of single figure*1000 ie =a1*1000

then copy onto new spreadsheet

I am assuming the single digit cells are simply that single digits

Type 1000 somewhere, copy it, paste special on all single digit cells choosing values and multiply

Copy, highlight the target cells, hit Alt, E, S, V, M (individually you don't have to hold each one down) then enter.

Wow

wow what. It mucked up my whole spreadsheet.

how is it supposed to work.

There's something you're not telling us about what you're trying to do because those are the hot keys to perform multiplication using the paste special function.
[quote]
Copy the 1000 you have typed then select a cell with the value you want in 1000s then use the hot keys above. If it works in one cell do it again but select all target cells before you paste.

write the formula as I advised - that way you can see and control whats happening, jono's solution is great for an experienced user

Are you serious? Pivot tables are easy ... this is something that is some stupid hot keys or some conversion that my spreadsheet in excel 2003 doesn't like.. I didn't have time to piss around and had to convert them all manually OMFG... even trying to do my vlookups aren't working.. and my formulas I used in 2007 are not working,

#NA = my worst nightmare atm.

Sad

Haha you didn't have enough time to learn paste special, but had enough time to convert them all manually?

I tried to do the paste special.. it didn't work seriously I was sitting there for half an hour it felt like pissing about trying to convert the data. So not good.

If I wasn't so fast and accurate at keying data I would have kept trying the bloody paste special stuff but it seriously wasn't budging.
