Entering NZ from US with felony??

A friend of mine is hoping to come over from California but has one possession felony (served 60 days) from about 12 months ago and thats it. Will there be trouble getting though customs? Is it luck? HELP!

Get him to see the NZ Consulate over there though. They'll tell him if he can or not. The beauty of this option is that you don't have to spend a grand and travel for 12h in a cramped metal tube to find out :>
