If so, what genres? New or second hand? Smile

nah, unless its only available on vinyl, who needs vinyl when you have serato ?

I only buy vinyl most of the time straight from the germans, seeing as i play mostly german techno/minimal/glitch this makes sense... There is nothing i need so fresh as to not be able to wait 10 days or so for delivery....
Although i hate digital djing and therefore maintain an ongoing love affair with vinyl, i have been known to buy the odd mixed CD for my missus.

Occassionally...and usually just for the sake of some new tunes (not fresh) in my crate so I rape the local stores $5 bins.

Good point. This year i have scored about 30 records from Gemm.com, all the primo late 80's acid/manchester cuts id always wanted but never found locally. More often than not awesome condition (better than i have ever found "classic" records in NZ anyway), like the Depeche Mode - Dub in My Eyes 1990 Francois Kervorkian remix which i scored for $12 landed. Score!

Only buy vinyl but going to get a cdj asap.

Techno, minimal, house, baile funk, baltimore, ghetto tech and drum n bass when i can afford.

Just scored a picture disk of Nirvana - Bleach too Very Happy

Only miami bass and old electro, cant get that stuff digital.

I still sift through second hand bins on a regular basis to find oddities to add to my collection; This can include music from ANY genre be it house, techno, hip-hop, funk, 80s cheese, experimental sound records, chill out and lounge, pop, rock etc...

I very rarely buy new stuff on vinyl though (the last new records I bought included one battle record and a cut price breaks bootleg of a Muse track hehe) ...most techno / tech-house I procure to play on my radio show is found via online stores, downloaded and burnt to CD.

Perhaps this thread could be copied to the lounge? Plenty of DJs in there who are to cool to look at the DJ forums, although their opinions on this matter may be interesting Smile

True, go for it - just make sure it comes with a heavy disclaimer ie this is NOT a vinyl vs digital debate.. /yawn

Interesting responses so far.

Although I flirted with the idea of going digital (Serato) a few months ago I've now settled comfortably back into my relationship with vinyl..

It's weird, I went through the crates last night, and I don't think I could ever part with most of of this stuff.. and even if I did go digital, I don't think I'd be able to resist digging, and picking up the odd new LP..

Heard a few people say similar things recently. Its quite reassuring. Sure you may have to contact promoters of some gigs to makesure the set up actually includes turntables and cartridges (let alone having them anywhere near the mixer) but its still completely viable and worth it for those that dig it.

I buy vinyl all the time, 90-95% of the time when djing I'm playing vinyl, I like to find the odd weird thing or ridiculous bootleg which I will play on cd.

I buy house/techno and the odd dubstep record.. Also collect jazz, reggae, bits of hiphop and whatever else takes my fancy.

I've flirted with the idea of using serato but decided against it for the time being at least.

Vinyl - both new and second hand

Buy vinyl mostly second hand but i go to aucks when i can for so new tunes every couple of months . Got to keep up with some new sounds every now and then , lovin the electro cant get enough of it .

Its one of my favourite pastimes, going into a record store and rifling through the discount crates for old gems or anything that grabs my interest. I spend hours doing it Music

as i said in the lounge thread

"nothing beats getting new records, pulling them out of there homes for the first time all clean and untouched and then slipping them on the needle ready for its musical goodness, its like christmas every time"

don't as much as I'd like to or used to but still buying the wax

I buy across a range of genres

latest purchase a double LP (gatefold sleeve - wahoo!) of NZ artists, brought mainly for a cover of the Headless Chickens "Do The Headless Chicken" by Shihad which they recorded in '96

Thats a wicked way to think of new records Honey

If it's a big tune or i love it that much I'll buy the 12" (which is a fair few)

If it's an inbetweener or a style of music I knw no one will care about in 2 weeks time I'll go digital. Simply cos i don't play them enough anywhere.

Nothing beats having it on 12inch.

Also half the venue I step in don't have turntables anymore
[quote]
Yep

New usually a few second hand

Progressive house mainly

said to to see oh well they lose out on some timeless classics

I only buy vinyl. I tend to normally buy new but like to search through the second hand bins once in a while too.

I preety much only buy drum and bass but will buy the odd breaks tune.

I kind of go thrugh periods where I will buy a whole bunch of tunes at once - then I'm broke so don't buy any for a while.

But I fully agree with what was said about nothing beats buying a new tune and getting all excited to go home and chuck it on.

I love the whole act of going to the record store and searching through the crates, listening to a bunch of tunes, finally finding a few that do it for you. So much better than sitting at home on beatport or something and buying them digitally.

My opinion anyway..

Nothing beats buying rekurdz from a shop. Even sifting thru 12" tunes on Chemical-Records isn't the same. Sorting through a stack of fresh tracks to find the handful that gives ya goosebumps. The feeling of a worth-while investment once I walk out the door of a record store and the eagerness to see how your new tunes mesh with your current/old is awesome! Can't say the same about anything else I purchase these days Music

Just started using Traktor Scratch and I love it - but there is a true lack of satisfaction from owning a tune on digital compared to claiming a tune on 12"... if yaknowot-imean..

Price is a kick in the nutz with vinyl, but as mentioned above, for me it's still the most satifying retail purchase I make.

Being a nooB to digital, I'm still finding my feet. Not having any vinyl/record stores locally makes the likes of Beatport great for convinience factor and access to a vast array of releases over all sorts of genres (I buy Breaks: funky, party or dirty mainly).

In answer to the topic: even after just going 'time-code', I think when the oportunity is there (for me when I'm in Aucks, Sydney or Melbourne) I will still find myself buying a few trax on wax.

Vinyl till I Die
(or until 'Live' DJing takes over Razz )
