Do you think that America can separate Church and State ?

Interesting article here in the Sydney Morning Herald:

Things have become quite grim in America since the 1930's. It's now impossible to become president without having a religious affiliation to the Christian denomination.

For a country that advertised freedom in the 20th Century, they seem to be restricting freedom of thought quite heavily these days.

I often see the Republican Party and the Bible as preaching in the same way, fear of the unknown in order to control the masses.

So I guess with the random way I have got around to saying what I meant to, do you think America can now ever truly separate Church and State ?

I always find it amusing when people use ‘separate the church and the state’ as their rational for state sponsored/enforced atheism.

"Of all the dramatic changes witnessed since 1945 ... none was more unforeseen than the resurgence of religion."

That's because the rational world view was yet to come to terms with the limits of rationality.
Reason doesn't make us any happier, it doesn't make our societies more just, and it doesn't make the vagaries of our world any more predictable.

Secular =/= Atheism.

Also, reason might not necessarily make us happier, but reason certainly does make us less likely to make others less happy.

I sense a utilitarian argument for religion coming on

Religion cannot be judged by utilitarian standards. Only by its truth, or lack thereof.
