make a file system that doesn't make half of the non-alpha/numeric characters illegal in filenames??

I know that they are entrenched in some sort of backwards-compatibility crap, but really, it's kinda fucking lame that you can't use < > $ : / \ ? among others in filenames. Question marks especially.

Its not because of backward compability, the special characters have current meanings.

? is a wildcard character currently useful within scripting.. and shit you must recognise its meaning within URL's surely?

The requirement to have ? as part of a filename would be deemed pretty low vs the requirement to have ? remain a special character. Filenames are part of UNC paths and as mentioned part of URL's.

So no I think they will be special characters for a while. Although it is possible that eventually they may be purely for backwards compability.

Seems like a really useful feature to me. My office has this one spreadsheet which is called "the price" which works out if prices are correct and it really gets my goat when people ask me for the latest copy and forget the upwards inflection.

If it was called "the price?" there would be no confusion.

Heh, it's no biggie, but it just seems kinda archaic. Movie titles have question marks (although I suppose your supposed to use some sort of tag data perhaps?!) and I've had to create folders when sharing computers with messy bastards (who aren't around at the crucial time) with passive-aggressive titles like "delete?".
