Theres a place called MAINZ in victoria st that im enrolled at doing a diploma in audio engineering.

every month or so they do a 4 week DJ course with some real flash nz dj. covers all the basics of scratching, mixing and general use of decks and digitals. its a real good course and from memory its only $50.

If you ever venture down to Wellington., Check out the DJ SKOOL at Whitieia Polytech. The course is NZ's 1st and only NZQA approved course and runs for a year.It is taught by DJs RAW + SHAN from a Turntablist perspective which you can transfer to towards any gengre of music. Best DJ school/ course in the country... Music

I listened to alot of mixtapes (yes cassette tapes) of dej's & also went out and saw other people djing & I asked lots of questions from dj's.

Biggest misconception is people think you can be taught how to DJ.

You can only be taught the principles of how to use your turntables / mixer and the principle of beat matching but it comes down to you spending hours and hours practising.

I'd been listening to dance music and going to gigs/clubs for years. It's a bit of a natural progression for many people i think.

I basically just bought the gear and practiced practiced practiced. Got a few pointers from the few DJ's i knew at the time and looked up alot of the theory on the internet. But yeah, Nick's right, it's just a practice thing really.

There are courses you can do but they are generally Hip Hop focussed and just again teach you the theory behind it, which you can find easily online anyway.

Easiest ways to start:

a) Have a go on a mates decks and see what it's like. It does take time.

b) Do a course. I know MAINZ run one... or used to ... they should still. If you need any help or are interested in following this path PM me and I can link you to the info.
