Dance Music and Hip Hop

I guess since this site is mainly based on NZ's dance seen, i guess most of you are into it:

Are you more of a Hip Hop person? or are you infact only interested in the hip hop part of this place?

Definitely a dance music genre whore, myself, and although I know sweet fuck-all about hip hop in specifics, I do actually like it a lot. Sometimes the vibe at gigs can be a bit wack though, so I don't go to that money. Too much time and money spent following DnB and breaks! However, when I start working, I'm gonna start stocking up on hiphop CDs and shit.

trance, prog & hard house are the only ones that dont really do it for me but I generally like most types of music.

I tend to sway here and there alot. If I get sick of one genre I usually re-discover what I liked about another genre.

I guess I am more of a Hip Hop person though. This is usually the first forum I check when I log on.

I mostly listen to dnb. But also a lot of hip hop, house, dub and reggae

of all genres, hip hop would be my fav, exploring new genres now though, dnb, dub and house. all good. but more into the hip hop culture no doubt. urban all the way.

blink: You should love nu skool breaks then. A cool blend between DnB and house in many ways, also encompassing some of the scratching and turntablist elements of hip hop...

hip hop is my love, but i also frequent dnb gigs often and house parties when i can afford the drugs

i love most of music except some cheesy trance, hard house and some sleepy pro house

You should definately check out Breakers Delight, True Believers or Analog Breaks whenever they come around. They are the best nights out at the moment.

Most of the Analog and Breakers parties are held at Mix. Breakers is monthly... not sure about Analog. (I'm from Wellington)

I'm just getting into breaks myself, but if you pop into the breaks forum there are heaps of artists and CDs to look out for in threads there.

Just getting into hip hop myself, and probably only at home. I never really enjoy the vibe at pure hip hop gigs, for some reason. Maybe I'm just not used to it?

I'm totally down with the hip hop/DnB crossover though - pity there's not heaps happening on that front in Wellington at the mo. I fucking loved Dj Craze when he was here earlier in the year though - I guess he's what got me into hip hop...

yeah but then the drugs wear off and you realise the music isn't music. I'm a hiphop fanatic but frequent the dnb, if it's got good beats then I'm happy. But 4 on the floor nonsense - it doesn't do shit musically, even though it may be good to dance to at times. Personally I'd like to see more big hiphop-based parties, and not dumb commercial beats, more experimental hiphop styling, old school, underground, electro etc, hip hop and partying just go hand in hand but too often the hiphop you hear out is boring too.

if i had to choose my fav genre..would be dnb...but been gettin into a bit of hip hop lately..and defintaley partial to a bit of trip hop and downbeat...some dub sounds as well.....

If you talkin hip hop dance music, I checked out the one like 'Cool Hands Luke' ex. NZ lives in Sydney. At a film wrap party of all places. The brotha played a dope set of jump-up hip hop,funk, dancehall,saturdaynite-hands in the air and booty shake shit. Mad scratching, fuck all use of head phones and a crazy musical flow. This guy had hip hop dance music covered. No one could sit down!
Manual Bundy taught him to scratch.
You could give him a bag of shitty tunes and he'd make them sound dope!

Me too. I am branching out. I think it's limiting your listening if you just stick to one kind of music all the time.

I used to be into HardHouse, but that's just too repetitive for me now. I like the breaks and the bigger beats.

They are their own label (Eighteenth Street Lounge) and they are also artists. Great.

Was right into my hip hop and drum & bass b4 I went to my first good hardhouse party, but got into dramas nearly every weekend. Genre wars are silly, open your mind to new music and whatever you dig, you dig. Genre is nothin but a label.

My eyes are open. I appreciate most forms of GOOD music, and enjoy a large variety. And don't need drugs to enjoy them either.

IMO Hard House is boring, repetitive and lacks soul (for the want of a better word).

And before you start jumping the gun, I have been to my fair share of HH gigs and listened to great deal of the music. Not only did the music irritate me, so did the muppets that attended.

I agree with you, genre wars are redundant and opinions will always differ.

But when HH is finally buried because of lack of innovation, decreased popularity and basically arse tracks; you will realise that you have wasted much of your time listening to crap.

I don't think you need to take pills to listen to any style of music if you like it. Maybe if you don't then you might but why listen to music you don't like?
Personally I have found the hip-hop scene to be as full of drug munters as the hardhouse/trance scene so to attack that scene on the basis that is it is just drug noise in nonsense.
Pills and Hip hop are actually a fun combo; helps us wiggas dance.
