i live here but haven't been out for a couple of years, what's going on in Auckland?

My impression is most clubs play house (which is fine, i like house too.)

Are there any clubs that play trance regularly?
[quote]
Not too sure what you mean by Trance, based on comments in other threads Wink

There is a psytrance gig on at space on the 15th July...

Then there is Oxygen at Studio on the 12th August..

Both will play completely different music. About as different as Funky House & Electro, Breaks or DnB, hardhouse or hardstyle...
[quote]
i am talking any kind of trance. So apart from the occasional (monthly?) "special event", there is no trance played in Auckland?
[quote]
Nah, it hasnt done well at the last couple of places that have tried it Sad

why do you think that is? Is trance (of any kind) not music clubbers want to hear?

Its just in the dip part of its cycle Wink

Kiss bar plays hard trance every weekend. They market it as hardhouse, but I've been there and it's just hard german trance - fluffy trance if you get there early.
[quote]
thanks virgo, so Kiss bar plays hard trance every week. Cool. Maybe there is _some_ interest in trance out there. (Unless as you say the punters think it's hard house.) Who are the DJs at Kiss?

How about hardhouse - is that played a lot at clubs regularly? Just so i have a comparison point.

I'm still interested in others' perspective on what's happening with trance nights in Auckland.

cheers Smile

The last 2 weekly trance nights in Auckland failed miserably.. i.e 5 people in the club at a time, sometimes no one.

The scene is extremely events orientated at the moment, and people dont seem to grasp the concept that if they do not support it, they will lose it.

These sort of threads get started every now and then, then a promoter puts their balls on the line and does something. 9/10 times you will find the people who moan about the trance scene will never even turn up anyway.

In saying that though, myself and another party are looking at doing something later this year on a semi regular basis. A chance to showcase some of the new talent coming through & give the rest of the guys somewhere to play.

so true. been there done that.

yeah ...........jaykay, we do agree on one thing at least....and that is so true....

So come on people, let's go to ALL the trance events before the trance DJ's and promoters of NZ are forced to moved to the UK or Australia.

Luckly I like Hard Trance & House Wink
Oh why is good trance so hatted by Clubbers these days Confused And by good trance I mean Dutch & UK Style the likes of Armin Van Buren, Tiesto, Paul Van Dyk, DT8, Signum, Above & Beyond & Lost Witness etc etc.

Another thing i notice.. personally. Is that i make an effort to turn up to most gigs by new promoters with my friends and whanau. Then one of my gigs comes around, and they dont bother.

Support me and i will support you Wink

Another thing.. is all the DJ's that ask for sets, then dont bother supporting. The DJ that is front centre, supporting every gig is far more likely to get booked, if they have talent.
Goes for a few genres i do bookings for.. house included.

Just some thoughts...

That is why CJ, mcenergy and nick gave me my first few sets... Wink

For some reason (unfortunately) trance doesn't seem to be "stand around and have a few drinks" kind of music. I really only go for it if I think I'm going to have a big crazy ass night. Possibly I have just been conditioned to think like this.

Also I don't enjoy it as much in small clubs (where of course regular nights will be). It's a vicious circle.

The numbers must be there.. they certainly come out in force when there's a big st james/manukau muntfest..

i do agree that (to me) trance is "big room" kinda music. imho it goes best at something outdoors where it's 'epic' quality seems to fit really well.

Hence for an 'average' night many people might not choose a trance event. So maybe a monthly rather than weekly event would work better.

On the other hand, if you're able to have a second room with something more mellow happening, then everyone is catered for. Also, structuring the trance room so it's not hands in the air right from the start - starting with slower, deeper stuff, peaking about 3am with "whoohoo trance" and then winding down a bit from there helps people to pace themselves and gives them a true "journey".

That's what i used to do when putting on events, but in the end punters are fickle in any genre and it's always a risk when promoting something. Something as simple as a rainy night can keep people away.

my 2c Smile
[quote]
I think The Journey is a bit wasted on a regular night. People will (hopefully) be popping in and out, not necessarily there all night like they are for a big gig. If the bit they're present for is not what they expected, they might not come back next month.. Smile
[quote]
good point.

if the venue is near other venues (viaduct, k road) they will pop in and out. If it's not near other similar places (Space, Asta) then people will choose to be there for longer. IF you can get them there in the first place, of course.

Wellington has never had a big trance following, I remember back in 2002 when the innercity party came with Johan Gielen, Barthezz and DJ Jean, would have been lucky if there were a combined total of 20 people through the door at Phoenix that night, I felt embarrased.
[quote]
Indeed, remember that night quite well...
Have to say though that there has been quite a large trance following but it was perhaps more prominent before then (Cable Street shindings, early Hulabaloo's etc etc) - but i digress & this topic is about Auckland anyway...

Your kinda right.. but kinda not...

Is any dance music "Stand around and have a few drinks" ? If trance is not.. then hard dance and DNB aint..

Ive put on a couple of gigs in wellington.. and played at several of them (The most recent being bout a month ago) ... and i goto most hard dance gigs here to (in the hope they wont play naily crap)

The thing that strikes me bout the hard dance scene.. is that while its big.. 80% of people at the gigs go there every single time.. its the same people all the time.. which i rekon is cool.. but we simply dont have that in the trance scene here in wellington..

Its about building up a fanbase.. alot of people who love trance.. dont even know its trance.. and those that do.. dont really "go out"...

And thats fucking hard on people like myself and other s when trying to put on a party.. because its not bout how much money you might make outta the party.. its about how much money your gonna lose... and without any partys.. the fanbase cant grow..

People love trance.. goto a hard dance party.. the biggest roar from the crowd will be when there is a hard remix of a big trance song...

I was the dj at the tawa college afterball about 3 weeks ago... i had to play complete fucking crap (hip hop) ... they were all loving it.. then i played`as the rush comes.. they were kinda :/ .. althou some of them were loving it.. then i played fucking sash! and they all went hard... so i play catch .. they dim down a bit.. then i play the bongo song.. and they all go nuts... but yeah.. u see what i mean lol.

So how do we build a fanbase here in new zealand ??

A) Support your local gigs... if there is a trance gig on.. goto it.. and drag your mates along... even if they hate trance.. get them drunk and take them to it Razz

B) More Parties with *LOTS* of advertising... yes this sux for us who put on parties.. cause its gonna cost alot of money.. but there are smart ways to do this.

C) *Keep* the fanbase as it grows.. let them know bout upcoming partys... direct them towards biggie etc.. and educate them.. most people think its all "techno" anyways

D) Have Faith For Fucks Sake .. dont say the scene is dead.. cause its not.. its just in new zealand we seem to be as low as they come when it comes to trance... but it IS on the up (very slowly i might add) and wit a bit of hard work from everyone imho it could easily be thriving again in a year or so

Yep. Trance is usually the gateway for people into dance music (although maybe it's been hard dance in the last few years). Later on some of them get into DnB or House, but usually they start with Trance.

Oh my gosh the Scratching that DJ Jean pulled out in the middle of The Launch was so awesome. I believe from memory around 250 people came throughout the night to Inner City but still not very many. Sample Gee was pulling in a good crowd around that time when he came down to promote his latest CD release.

A trance show on a commercial channel, c4 or george would do wonders for trance and grow a fan base. When laggered was selling and ZM played trance on a friday night trance was big because people like to listen to songs they know or are familiar with.

Commercial radio.. and even george don't give a fuck about trance or hard shit... that is there niche and is what makes them successfull so as pointed out in another thread.

Go to these stations find yourself a sponsor who will chuck thousands of dollars into a deal for them and then it may happen.

buy your way on

Or even better, let' take over a large sized station, claim it as our own, and pump out trance of every kind 24 hours a day, all over New Zealand
