cubase studio 4 vs able live 7...thoughts?
[quote]
Two very differnt proframs and workflows.

Me - Cubase for studio, Live for live...

live is "starting" to get it right for production with live8

For someone just getting into production like myself I'm finding Live 8 great to use.

Mind you there could be limitations I'm not aware of yet seeing as I'm new to it.

This has been covered many times before.
The thing with Cubase, Protools, and Logic they operate in a native studio enviroment, where the new fullas Ableton, Fruity, Acid etc are a whole new way of approaching audio production. Which is good and bad depending on your end goal.

This is where Reason is great for learning the prod ropes. It's dead easy to use, and it operates in a semi-native studio eniviroment (you can even re-patch devices using cool animated patch leads!). Once you have pushed it around a bit you can then move on to a big boys sequencer.

Now 5 vs. 8.

About to start mucking around with writing in 8 and mixing down in 5.

Very Happy

8 is well advanced and the limitations are getting less, the main thing to be wary of is not pushing vst's too hard as the sound quality can drop pretty quick... but be sure to work in 48k or 96k+ if your sound card supports it.

i'm still testing some problems with the latest NI Komplete 5 suite, some vsts dont load, other make live8 hang.

however, the full instrument suite for live8 is pretty impressive compared to the older stuff.

whilst the new multiband compressor and limiter is pretty solid, i'm still intending on doing final mixing elsewhere (or most likely getting someone else to do it for me)

also... if you get the chance, check out the new Akai APC controller purpose built for live... S.O.L.I.D

More the writing of 'loops' in the Session Window, playing that live into Cubase, and further manipulation there.

Its more for the live stuff than anything else.

From what I have seen, the 'audio' editing is still fairly limited in Ableton compared to Cubase..

I personally wouldn't be too worried about 96k...

In fact, unless you are dealing with external equipment, I don't know if I would be bothered with 48k either...

personally..

i've noticed more head-room and audio clarity from ableton when using 48/96k
[quote]
And what would be your soundcard/monitor/room setup?
[quote]
E-Mu 1616m with KRK V6's that i will be replacing with Adam's or Mackie's

Also notice a difference in the audio quality with the Ultrasone's you recommended when going between the 1616m@96k and an M-Audio Fast track pro@44.1 (used when travelling because of the USB power feature)...

as for the room, close to what you recommended on your video...

if its not the audio gear making a difference, it must be the vodka... Laughing

Hmm.. I have a genuine interest in this sort of thing.

Planning some blind tests in the future - will let everyone know..
