This is really sad.. AUCKLAND CENTRAL LIBIRARY are the real pirate bay! infringement notices should be sent to them. They even have photo copying machines to allow you to photo copy the books there without the publisher's permission FOR YOUR CONVENIENCE! Libraries even charge you to use their copying machine to do this! Now that's a pretty sweet business model right thur.

I've seen old ladies going hard photo copying their fave cook books at the aux library. Now those are the real pirates!
[quote]
ah but those little old ladies make cupcakes for the SPCA y'know
[quote]

Silly, since limited photocopying is specifically addressed in the Copyright Act.

Decent summary: http://library.canterbury.ac.nz/services/conditio.shtml
[quote]
What you mean this?
------------------
Photocopying Conditions and Copyright

The following conditions must be observed when copying material:

The University forbids and does not authorize the use of its photocopying machines to copy any work where such copying does not fall within the provisions of sections 19(1) or 20(1) of the Copyright Act.

To comply with the law on copyright, the following rules must be observed:

it must be for research or private study only
it must be for your own use and must not be copied for supply to another person
copying of an unpublished work is forbidden without express permission of the owner(s) of the copyright in such a work
you must not make more than one copy of any part of a work
you must not copy the whole of a work
or a whole chapter
or the greater part of a particular topic
or a summary contained in the work
or more than a reasonable proportion of a work
you must not copy parts of a work so as to avoid purchasing reproductions of the work
you must not copy significant parts of a work where you already have reasonable access to the work whether by purchase or loan.

It is the responsibility of individual users of these photocopying machines to observe the legal requirements of the Copyright Act. These photocopiers are made available on the express condition that users will indemnify the University in respect of any claim made against it for breach of copyright.
-----------------

Whose gonna enforce this? the angry uni library lady with a strap-on on who would walk around the library spying on those who are sharing notes they copied from physics 101 lab manual? so if you get caught copying the whole chaptor you will be given a warning, 3rd warning they will nark on you to the respective copyright owners who eventually sue you for 15k and ban you from the uni libary for a few months. You then need to register for new library card at a different library sunshine for the cycle to begin again...

Being that that's exactly what I linked, yes.

And of course no one enforces it, that doesn't mean there's not potential legal consequences.

shocking stereotypes of ladies in libraries going on right here

shame on you fatboi

I bet you're not even fat... ya skinny bastard

So does anyone know anyone who has received a notice? As usual I expect the media beatup to be a long way from reality.
[quote]
In NZ under this law? No, because that part of it isn't enacted yet.

In other jurisdictions under other law? Fuckin heaps.

Quite what do you mean anyway? I don't think you understand just how terribly written and implemented this law is, and yet how easily you can bypass it with a small amount of work.

best way to make a point is gather a group with laptops with backtrack installed outside parliament and start seeding the new harry potter movie! While protesting peacefully Gandhi style.

never let the facts get in the way of politicing

labour has no moral high ground on which to stand over this issue - the whole clusterfuck started with them and their pandering to one sector

I mean I think common sense will prevail and there won't be any great miscarriage of justice.
[quote]
Yes because that's certainly been the case in other jurisdictions Wink

How long do you think it'll be before they start cracking down on Unet
[quote]
Never imo. Their options are far more limited for Usenet.. Can't get offending IPs as easily (or at all, mostly). Also it's still relatively 'underground' compared to P2P..

Individuals downloading stuff I agree, I was meaning more the news server owners.

^ not surprised.. "Telecom spokeswoman Anna Skerten said the company had not received any requests from copyright holders that it send infringement notices to its customers by late afternoon.""

[quote]
I can imagine the rights holders not wanting to be the first to issue a infringement notice to a ISP as the media smell a lovely human interest story (granny falsely accused was popular in the states)... and that company will look like cunts

Due to the procedures now in place, it's unlikely we will see any infringement notices until November.
