Connecting laptop to TV

Have been trying to figure out how to connect my laptop to tv to play movies and i'm getting very fustrated!

on my old laptop i used a headphone jack to 2 RCA and another RCA TO RCA (i'm pretty sure) then pushed f5 and all was sweet.

haven't had a need to connect my new laptop to a tv until now, and when i can do the headphone jack to 2 RCA fine, but then for the other RCA to RCA there isn't anywhere in my laptop to put the cord! well only place that it fits is the microphone jack but i know that isnt right.
only other 'holes' i have are usbs, external monitor 15 pin, multimedia card slot and phone jacks.


would i need something to go into the external monitor hole for video??

If anyone can help i'll be forever grateful.. have been looking on the toshiba website/forums but its not much use.

Also what inputs do you have on your TV? Is it kinda new? Any chance you have a VGA (computer) style input?

no don't have one of those... pretty sure i had one on my last computer though.

external monitor = vga. if you have an lcd tv, you likely have one of those on your tv. if you just have a conventional tv, it's going to be a pain in the arse.

yeah just a normal tv, and definitely an external monitor plug hole.

so can you get an RCA to external monitor cable?
does it have a special name?

not just a cable sadly, you need a converter box.

DSE probably has the same product codes in Oz. that, and the appropriate cables to connect, which the shop guys should be able to point out.

What model is your laptop, thats the first question. Let us google it and figure it out rather than saying "i've got this round thingee that doesnt look like another round thingee"

The only output its got is for a monitor, so you'll need to invest in a converter box as kris_b has suggested.

Ive got a HP pavilion dv9000 that i want to hook up to a lcd tv...ive got the VGA cord...do i need anything else?

get an s-video cable

Just had a quickly look and it says your laptop has S-Vid out. So you will need a cable like the one that PhunkDave posted in his first post. That will give you video and to get sound you will need a 2 x RCA to 3.5mm audio jack.

i thought most lcd tvs have vga in? much better picture quality if it does

look for a blue trapezoid shape plug with lots of pins in two rows.

Youll need to change the output on your laptop with Fn F5 or similar.
