Oh I know. I sat in a class last year where one guy incessantly used "back in the day" to describe "retro" video games from what must have been no more than 10 years ago (we were developing a game).
Drives me nuts when people get stuck on one meaningless phrase and don't notice it.
[quote]
What the fuck are you old cunts on about?

"Back in the day" is not a meaningless phrase Confused
[quote]
Literally it's meaningless. And if you overuse it it becomes meaningless. And if you use it to describe shit that wasn't *that* long ago then...
[quote]
Never the less, now there's a meaningless phrase. What does that even mean when used the way it normally is?
"well, never the less you still have to go"
[quote]
Smiley I think you should change your name to Frowny..

You seem to be quite down about .. well everything these days

(I say these days as in contrast to how things were.. back in the day)

Can you also get some Frowny stickers made up?

Literally you have no idea what the word literally means.

Laughing
[quote]
I think its in response to what could be considered an opposing point, perhaps synomous with ‘despite that’

Eg This morning I woke up hungover in a pool of my own vomit.. none the less I’m getting crunk! Very Happy

Ok… maybe someone else can explain it better

You're using a sentence "none the less" when you actually mean the word "nonetheless". Nonetheless, you're right, it means 'despite that'. Nevertheless is also a word, but despite your incorrect use, it means the same thing, mostly.
[quote]
Weeeeell call me stooped (fuck you all dont Razz ), but how does "despite that" mean "nonetheless"??
[quote]
this may clarify Kris's post for them not born back in the day

OUR USNG A SNTNC NN TH LSS WHN U ACTLLY MEAN TH WRD NNTHLSS. NNTHLSS YOUR RGHT IT MEANS DSPT THT. NVRTHLSS IS ALS A WRD BT DSPT YR INCRRCT US IT MEANS TH SM THNG MSTLY.

Actually, I think you have just read it funny or something... The words "back in the day" strung together at taken literally do not have any meaning. Nothing that makes sense anyway.

not the literal sense but there is sense in the usage of the term

course it makes more sense to say "back in my day" as that defines when that day might have been

june 7 1554 for me

That's fine except it does. Can you argue that there are extra words in the phrase that don't add meaning over "I remember when" or "I used to"? Sure. Does that matter? No, it's called colloquialism. "Back in the day" also tends to imply a wistful feeling of nostalgia that those formal phrases don't.

Language changes and evolves, that's how we ended up with words like "nonetheless".
[quote]
Smiley said:

Probably because just about every single time you post here these days, you're being negative about something.

Edit: and yes, you're much cheerier in real life. Certainly not here though.
[quote]
yes okay, I accept that but my post would have had less impact if I hadn't said that.

And I would have gotten away with it, if it weren't for you meddling...

You go to "Account Settings".. then "Privacy Settings" and click on where it says "Deactivate your account".
[quote]
ooooohhhhh
[quote]
as if I could remember that sequence of clicks

its far too confusing

[quote]
Ok, then try this method. Open up the person who's facebook page you want to "unfriend". When it's open, pick up your computer and hold it over your head. Then run towards the nearest window screaming "we're not friends", and throw it through the window.

Works better if you're in a room with other people.
[quote]
if you knew my place of work you'd know that wouldn't raise an eyebrow here

would cause chaos on a major intersection however

are you still confused or are we all just posting shite cause we can

They say it's techno, but I think we can all agree this music is far too ghey for that, thus is probably right up your alley.

Simple contraction. Contraction lead to many modern words over the eons.

I read something recently suggesting that the shorter words are in English, the longer they've generally been with us. Cat, dog and rat being prime examples thanks to their long association with man.

Obviously this means that TXTSPK is a legit form of language development Sad Stupid TXTSPK.

Not sure sorry mate. Edit: Quick Google showed nothing, lots of references but no idea where it came from. Presumably if it was a Hirst it would be easy to pick.
