I was thinking about this last night while watching NZ's run chase against the Windies. If we had continued and it came down to the last over and we lost our 9th wicket, what chance of Chris Martin surviving the over? (hypothetical of course as he was not playing).
He is a good, not great bowler. He is the same league, IMO, as many fast medium trundlers NZ seems to specialize in.
However, his batting is worse than appalling. He is the worst batsman bya ll accounts to play test cricket. We have usually had semi-competent number 11's who can at least hold up an end for a while if required.
However, with Martin, we may as well just declare when we lose our 9th.
Smithie was talking about it during the test. They were showing the score in the Auckland vs ???? domestic one dayer. Martin had been bowled first ball.
Smithie said it "boggled his mind that someone could be so utterly hopeless".
He apparantly struggles in backyard or beach cricket even.
