Best games for me as a kid
- crack the egg
- hit and roll (best game ever should be a actual sport, like softball but once you hit the ball you lay the bat down and the person with the ball tries to roll it to hit the bat)
- Kiss and catch Cool
- Tiggy
- Elastics
- Double Dutch
- Making forts
- Atari
- Marbles and knucklebones..
Oh there was the game like run down my houses lawn and see who could jump the furtherest over a bump in the lawn. Sounds lame but fuck it was fun... probably because I'm competitive so anything to see who's the best is fun for me Embarassed

I grew up in the serious baddest most ghetto street in west auckland so we made our own fun not sure if other people played on the road and went off visiting their friends around the ghetto neighbourhood with little to no adult supervison oh and just playing on the road most of the time rolling wit the homies. Gave me character growing up in the ghetto loved it. Being a kid was so fucking awesome.

Anyone got any cool games they made up as a kid.

BULLRUSH!!!

NOW it's /end thread :>
[quote]
yeah Bullrush was awesome
once it actually degenerated into a massive all in "play" fight covering the whole field.Weird thing was the teachers didnt seem to get too upset about it

Lots on jumping on top of each other, somtimes wth a big guy pretending to be Sasquatch and everyone trying to drag him down

We used to play ball tag a lot
[quote]
hrmm I kind of remember bullrush .. playing it on the field at primary .. can't remember how to play it though
[quote]
Murder in the dark
Spotlight

Loved playing midnight!
[quote]
bullrush got banned when I was at school.
[quote]
What was involved with murder in the dark and midnight?
[quote]
Manhunt had to be the best childhood game. We play in teams and occupy our entire neighbourhood street including all houses. We pretty much trespass and hide around our neighbour's houses/backyard etc. We even got carried away one time, sneaked into a house and hid in someone's closet.. lol. Fun time it was.
[quote]
murder in the dark and spotlight were awesome.

what is midnight?

forceback was cool.

another one i liked was seeing how many forward rolls you could do in the pool without stopping for a breath.

do kids still play these games or has playstation, xbox etc taken over? there's quite a few kids in the subdivision i live in, and they're often roaming around on their scooters, bikes etc so i guess the technology thing hasn't taken over all kids lives...which is a VERY good thing imo.

That's some ghetto Hit and Roll. We always played it like cricket and the challenges to hit the bat got progressively harder at shorter ranges.
[quote]
Gheto? thats how its played ...

Music
[quote]
Go home stay home (always played this when camping)
Spotlight
War
I used to play spaceships in trees all the time (obviously the tree was the spaceship). Best played alone so you can captain :>
Bullrush!! I was awesome at this - small & fast!
MacGuyver (haha, my brother would make "bombs" with batteries and other stuff and we'd jump off fences doing the tuck and roll while shooting people)
X-men
Families "playing house" Laughing
[quote]
playing with fire
playing with water
playing with rocks
[quote]
At my hillbilly school we played a fucking sadistic game called Murderball.
Object: Place the ball in the square being guarded by a bunch of knuckle dragging mono-brows. This square was to be guarded by any means necessary. Think bullrush mixed with American Football.

The teachers encouraged participation.

That and blowing shit up with double happy's, and shooting moon travellers at each other.

Wouldn't you have grown up in a ghetto mate?
[quote]
heh everyone I know plays it the way QT described?

I'm intrigued by this rich whitey version of Hit n Roll :>
[quote]
Hold the bat up rather than lying it down if the ball isn't hit very far or if the ball is relayed (telephone poled)?

Downfall was one of the best board games imo
Polystyrene used to melt in methylated spirits. If you ran two lines of that slime down the road you could do a pretty sweet Back to the Future fire stripes.

Awesome!
[quote]
Hit and Roll = Bat Down to us, played with cricket bat and yeah, if close range, bat was standing like a pole rather than lying down.

What Midnight?

Spotlight and Bullrush were awesome, bullrush got banned at school and scouts Sad

Playing Spotlight while on holiday in Picton I was running away from the person who was in...BAM...straight into a roped of new grass area, rope around the throat, complete backflip clothesline choke out...not pretty! Laughing
[quote]
Midnight involved a group of people in a sitting in a circle say a metre apart. Each person given a number, say 1-6 and a cup or something similar in the middle of the circle.

Teacher called a number say '2' and all the 2's have to get up, run around the outside of the circle and around the last person closest to where they were , into the middle to grab the cup.

(I think- bit hazey tbf) all i know is that it was awesome and I used to burn grass up like Usain trying to get that fucking cup

Something random happened when 'Midnight' was called out to I think- random free for all?
[quote]
OK, yeah, that sounds familiar...also remember a similar game called Fruit Salad, where everyojne was a type of fruit, same thing with calling out the fruit type rather than a name...and teacher could also call FRUIT SALAD and EVERYONE had to get up and run, was chaos! Laughing
[quote]
Oh and 'BRANDS' not so much a game but branding the shit out of someone with a tennis ball.

Laughing
[quote]
we used to run after horseless carriages waiving and shouting

simpler times
[quote]
The all time best was drama class in 4th form, we all read Day Of The Triffids, and then teach spent 2 weeks devising all sorts of random games based around the book…finishing with one in which we were all broken into teams of 6 people, 5 blind folded and one who still had their sight, who had to lead us around the school grounds to forage for food…teach had a wooden broom handle which he would tap-tap-tap-tap against nearby walls to signal to us that triffids were about (as they had these clickers on their bodies that they used to communicate with each other), and at times he would yell “TRIFFIDS” and we all had to hit the deck…while you’re cowering on the ground, he would swing the broom handle above you making a loud ‘wooosh’ noise being the triffids stingers…was so freaking epic!

Word of the game spread through the whole school and everyone was super jealous! Laughing

Bless you Mr Chivers, you were a legend!

Yeah same here. Bat down.

Or if you had wickets, then you could play with those. Was it called tippany(??) when if you tipped the ball you had to run?

Bullrush was banned at all our schools as well. Always some assholes would ruin it by smashing some poor little kid too hard. I remember big games though.

It always started off as Held though, then turned into tackle.

Haha, Ball Tag, but yes, was all about the brandings!

What was the all on the dude with the ball game? Oh, got it, SKRAG, that was mental! Laughing
[quote]
We used to run away from Dad.....a lot......esp when we hadn't hosed the cow shed down properly.
Got to be considered a game.
[quote]
We used to play Push Soccer as well. Just like normal soccer but you could tackle the dude with the ball. Lots of fights starting over whether someone had the ball or not.

Skrag. Fuck that was harsh. Just one person getting bashed until they let go of the ball.
[quote]
haha, yeah, I can't says I played Skrag much, was too small for that shit

Leknight, your country bumpkin farmyard 'games' don't count around these parts! Razz
[quote]
...stink.
What about "grab the 8k elecy fence and hold on as long as you can"?
Admittedly, this was not a game I volunteered for - more of a "if you dont play this, Ill smash you" type game with my brothers.

Fuck it was either that or run around with a stick.
[quote]
hahaha...the old electric fance games, played a couple of those myself once...ONCE

My mum's boyfriend said he once got in trouble playing silly buggers on a mates farm, dudes dad made them hold the fence while giving them each 3 paddles on the ass...alternating one hit each, and the counted started again if anyone let go!!! Arrrrr, the good old days Laughing
[quote]
Laughing we used to play that one LK.

At my school most games somehow involved play fighting.

One game we used to play was called "< insert name > in the bush".. all this involved was a group of us picking someone, singing "< insert whatever his name was > in the bush" in the tune of Queens another one bites the dust as we walked the school looking for them. Once we found them, we would pick them up.. walk them over to the closest bush, and throw them in it.

Yup with a kiwi cricket bat that had the toe missing due to concrete abuse
[quote]
I recall Hit and Roll being what the softball-style game was called, but also a technique in backyard or "Kiwi" cricket.
[quote]
We called it bat down. Wasnt kiwi cricket a "safe" version of cricket for teachers who got sick of seeing kids getting all their teef smashed out with cricket balls?

Is this why NZ batsmen have no fucking heart? Every cricketer needs to feel the brute force of hard leather against cranium from as young an age as possible Very Happy

Bat down was cool but it always escalated to someone just yelling "BAT DOWN TIIMMY, BAT FUCKING DOWN" at someone else.

Good times.
[quote]
Hit & Roll : I don't think it mattered if you were using a cricket or softball bat.
[quote]
Do you mean like a driveby?
[quote]
Ooh ooh, letterbox collecting!! Either smashed or taken home and placed in the trophy closet!!
Can be expanded to include road signs, public telephone handpieces, or golf club flags. This was obviously only played once a friend got their drivers license or we nicked the tractor on the sly.

These days kids play Farmville I think
[quote]
old people certainly play farmville - I know from my fassbok thingy on the interwebs

After Karate Kid came out we played Karate Gangs in primary school, basically gangs of 5 would face off in individual matches, thy fought until someone called down or dead. 3 downs or 1 dead won a fight.
[quote]
Good memories. Ball tag, go karts, spot light, water balooning cars and making tree huts of different variations was where it was at for me.

Did anyone ever make those pea shooter guns? Get a bit of green plastic piping (ie: telecom pipe maybe?), cut off a finger from a rubber dish washing glove, tape it on the end of the pipe and then fire hard peas out of it. We'd hide in bushes and fire them at cars ... it'd make a pretty decent sound, the car would stop, person would jump out, being kids we'd always outrun them and knew the shortcuts/hiding places in the neighbourhood.
[quote]
International hit and roll rules*:

catch = out
good hit = roll the ball at the bat (usually softball; cricket bat was the last resort as ball would roll over the top on wonky bits of grass) laid flat in direction of ball
hit of less than ten paces determined by length of batter's legs = throw on the full at bat laid perpendicular to the direction of ball
dink/nick = bat held upright, ball thrown on the full. If it was ridiculously close the batter could opt for the little known rule** whereby the tip of the bat was held against the ground at position of striking and bat is angled directly at thrower presenting only the handle tip as target.

*as I remember them from when I was 5
**often resulted in a branding for the batter due to introduction of dubious rules

Not so much a game as an obnoxious thing to do to school mates, but crushed wattle tree seeds mixed with water and left to stew a while STANK and were excellent stink bombs best left in people's desks and on the bus after exiting ^_^
