I read in one of the threads that Subtronix is pulling out of Christchurch for a while. Could someone tell me whether this is true ? There ain't nuthing wrong with with teh scene in Christchurch - and I am sure that everyone who turned up to see John B and Moving Fusion would agree with me.

There are a few reasons why the Goldie gig wasnt as full as they might have hoped:
1: Last time Goldie played chch people were pretty dissapointed with his set, which was mainly experimental shit
2: The ticket prices were $45 ! this was an increase of $20 in a year and a half since his last chch gig !

The ticket prices have jumped up this year, with Ed Rush, Grooverider, Doc Scott and Goldie all being $40 or over. If Subtronix is seeing a downturn in numbers at parties, it has to be something to do with the increased ticket prices. Hybrid was full for John B / Mov Fus, and I'm sure it will be again for Klute, where the tickets are an acceptable$25.

There isnt anything wrong with the dnb scene in chch, it's just that subtronix is charging us Auckland prices for Christchurch parties.

Heres what Goldie said about his recent trip to Nz, from his site at goldie.co.uk:

"You might not believe it at first, but whenever I play in New Zealand, it’s always off the fucking hook. I’m just back from an Asian tour, y’see, where I sampled the Auckland and Christchurch scenes. It’s not the first time, I’ve checked them out, but there’s a really healthy – but friendly – competition between the two cities. In Christchurch, some guys were raving so hard down the front they lost control, showered water everywhere and blew the mixer up! Until that happened, we were on course for one of my best sets in history. NZ has the best d&b scene in the world because you can play anything – old stuff, new stuff – and they know every tune. I had to pull out a performance cos it’s like being in the champion’s league!"

Christchurch massive (or not so massive). Due to ever decreasing attendances at Drum and Bass internationals in Christchurch, we at Subtronix will not be personally taking any of our internationals to your city until things noticeably improve. Chch used to be the highlight of most of our tours and it is very sad to see things how they are now. We sincerely hope things change, but for now, we and other promoters will not be risking our careers in a city that isn't showing the music much love. The first sign of this is Matrix now not playing in Chch (a PointBlank / Cyanide tour) and we have a major name in October that will also not be making it to your city. Let's hope you show Bailey some support this weekend. Whatever happened to the music lovers down there?

^^^ This was originally posted at the Subsonic website waaaay back in July. It pretty much says it all there.

Well, Subtronix said they werent bringin gigs down here because they were losing money on em pointing to low crowds @ gigs like Doc Scott, Zinc, etc.

Of course, there is no reason why Scientific couldnt buy the rights to future gigs, as has happened with Total Science, Goldie, Klute (I think) among others so its not like we will never get any internationals again.

Its been pretty much accepted that the ticket prices, though high, are fair, given the cost of DJs these days, the low dollar, and so on. So I dont think you can hassle Subtronix for that, it really does cost a packet to bring these guys out, especially with an MC. Te point should be made that if the Chch scene is so strong, people should be willing to pay $40 to see guys like Ed Rush/Optical, Grooverider, and Goldie.

Basically, gigs will continue as long there are people turning out. Personally, Id hate to see a situation where we only get the lower tier DJs/producers. True, the JB/MF gig was big, but the sound system at Hybrid is not the best, full ministry gigs simply cant be touched. I dont know about you, but I thought the Goldie gig was the best one this year. I for one would pay $40-$50 again and again if we could get a night like that.

The chch scene is healthy. A lot of younger people are getting into it at the moment. But there is a ton of bitchiness and infighting behind the scenes, so people new to the scene wont be aware of that. Lets just hope that people turn out, even if these gigs do cost $40.

Im not saying the gigs are getting worse ... cos there not, and I agree with you entirely about Goldie - easily one of the best parties I've ever been to. I currently study in Dunedin, and I have been commuting up home to Christchurch for every party this year, which certainly makes the cost add up. In Dunedin this year we have started pulling dnb int's. We have had Fierce, Bailey and Matrix. I think someone thought they were being smart by not taking Matrix to chch, but there plan backfired cos Goldie played the next night.

But Fusion in Dunedin only holds about 150 - 200 max, and tickets cost us about $25. Surely they must make more money taking parties to chch.

Anyway, Im not trying to bag the scene, I just hope Subtronix have taught us their lesson and they don't cancel any more gigs. Is Fabio still meant to be touring in November , and will they bring him to Chch ? If they did, they should see an increase in numbers, as its summer, and some people dont have educational commitments any more.

And you are right about the Hybrid sound system ...

Does any one know if any of the internationals who are in auckland & wellington at new year will make it down south? it would be a pretty mad week if they did!!!!!!!!!!!!!
with that whole scientific nxt generation shouldnt there hav been some of the terminal boys there?
or are those 2 "krus" at each other?
[quote]
Not that Id dare sink as low as the slagging that occurs on the STUPID doa board, but I think its a case of Scientific vs everyone else. If you dont know, Scientific is not exactly on great terms wid a lot of people. Then again, who can hassle, they do put on some good parties.

And yeah, that's a good question regarding the internationals after new years, whos got the info?
[quote]
Scientific vs everyone else? I would say it's more likely all jealous people VS Scientific. It happens in every city. People aren't prepared to put any work in to carve out their own professional market and business until they see someone else getting respect and opportunites from their hard work. What happens next is always obvious. The latecomers who are upset that they aren't getting any breaks even though they are all so much better than everyone else come in to try and take down the guys who have been there since day one and worked their asses off.
It's so very predictable. What is always lacking in this equation is respect, and full comprehension of the situation. Inevitably, the people who end up taking the most knocks are the ones that deserve the most respect. It's just very hard to get that across to the brainwashed friends of the 'underdog'.
If you can even be bothered.....
[quote]
the terminal guys have put on some good parties aswell (especially the earlier ones) but so has scientific. hopefully over time terminal will build up and be as succesful as other krus inthe country .

ok just a quick note about the hybrid system...

anyone and ... everyone with a problem with the sound system can come and voice their opinion to me or jonas personally, as we are up at the club almost ALL DAY, EVERYDAY AND EVERYNIGHT. so instead of making stoopid/negative coments, why not come up here and talk to us in person. that way your opinion will be noted and your questions about it answered !!

you see all you guys are doing is pissing people like me and jonas off by making random coments, generally about things you know nothing about, so why not get off your ass and out from infront of the compfort of your computer screen and come and talk to us. you may learn to have a different appreciation about the effort that goes into running a nightclub. a place that you guys can go to freely and generally do what you want.
"within reasonWink"

i have been around for a while and have seen this sort of shit before and it is just a repeating circle....
this same thing happened to the ministry 2-3 years ago... everyone dissing it out because it was overused, old, nothing ever changed, sound was shit, vibe sucked, security was awfull, all these things just roll around in a vicious circle and it does absolutely nothing but piss people off.
why dont you try and have some consideration for people that invest a hell of alot more than just a $30 ticket every month to go to a party.
everyone makes up the scene, wether it be a punter or promoter, dj or vj. none of it can exist without each other, and each other supporting it.
BUT it only takes a couple of people with loud voices to bring it down to the lowest of levels.
maybe if you think and look a little bit harder you will see what i am talking about......

but anyway.....

just to keep you all happy, we are putting a brand new rig into hybrid for next weekends double international with lemon8(NL) and klute(UK), so be nice and be happy !!!!!

peace.

Im not saying you guys dont try or anything, cos I
appreciate that you all put a lot of effort into
what we only see for a few ours when it's completely
dark, but that can't change the fact that the Hybrid
sound system just isn't as loud as Ministry, in the
same way that somewhere like Base can never be as
loud as Hybrid.

There are obvious pros and cons of all the CHCH
clubs, and Hybrid is always cheaper, has less of a
line and has a better chill area for example. We are
entitled to ours opinions about the different clubs
and their different vibes, so you can whinge about
all the effort you've put in but you can't use this
to affect my opinions. Hybrid IS quiter than the
Ministry
[quote]
bit of constructive criticism is allll good, and any promoter should be stoked to be hearing it, so they can make better. Simply dissing a place out however is lame, and helps no one, cept perhaps the dissers ego, if other dissers join in and agree etc.

peas,

in the chaos pie.

The comment from Goldie is very lucid. In the years I've spent trying my best -production wise and not always succeeding,I've met heaps of good people in the scene. There are very many talented people in this neck of the woods.Lets stop all the pointless dissing of each other and move forward. The music always wins!!
[quote]
Um..just to point out something about ministry's sound rig...they bring in extra sound for gig's as their inhouse rig is 'shit'..it doesnt even come close to being as loud as Hybrid's...next time you're in ministry look at the back of the speakers (inhouse) & see how many are actually plugged in & how may of their amps are actually on...it's a bit like advertising..20k soundsystem...with actually 20k of speakers (max output) with 12k of amps (max output)..I see it all the time..cant help it im a sound engineer...
cheers

Murray, I dont suppose you were at Goldie, cos you
could have helped fix the mixer !

"Murray, I dont suppose you were at Goldie, cos you

Not unless he is a miracle worker. There was water spilled inside the mixer and it was totally shorted. There was only one remedy, which was another mixer, which took time to get.........

I though it was quite funny. Raving crew so excited they spilt water over everything Smile
[quote]
in my opinion you cant judge a PA by how loud it
is anyway...jeez...some of the best PAs ive ever
heard havnt been that loud but oh so sweet...
(and you'll also find if some people had a little
more respect of the equipment they'd stop
redlining allnight ...and it'd sound much better)
[quote]
I definately think that hybrid has one of the best sound systems around as you can go up there on random thursday with a small crowd and still hear wicked tunes on a wicked systems. They also change the eq's so they are perfect for who is playing ( prog, DnB etc). I think a major reason for the demise of the drum and bass scene in Christchurch was after Dallas went overseas. I thought he was the best chch DnB dj his exit has left a space which will take a while to be filled. But chch seemed to get a little Drum N Bassed out afterall in the last while we have pretty much most of the don's of Drum n Bass like Ed rush & Optical, Bad Company, Konflict, Andy C, Bailey, Goldie, John B, Groveriders, and heaps of wicked MC's which is alot of cutting edge Drum and Bass. A break could be a good thing as it means when massive dj's come they will playing to a crowd who has been starved of Drum and Bass and will therefore the atmosphere will be electric. It is similar to what happened in the progressive scene here for a while and look how much Austin Leeds, Nick Warren and Lucien Foort went off. I also think Klute will be one not to miss as he is rising up in the DnB scene quickly and next year or the next he will be massive and you won't be able to pay near $20 to see him,

Peace out

more bass, as you probably know that comment was made a long time ago after a huge financial loss on our part and we were wanting to get some enthusiasm back, and it has worked in part and we have come to an arrangement with Scientific to ensure the almost constant flow of gigs.

It's all good! Boy have we got a big first half of 2002 planned for New Zealand. All will be revealed very shortly!!!!
