So I was fidgeting with a blank CD yesterday at work, bending it back and forth, when it suddenly snapped into four relatively clean pieces.

I was curious to see whether the CD-Rom could still read it, so arranged the four pieces back into a circle inside the CD-holder in the computer and pushed the button.

It didn't go well. In fact, it went rather terribly. As soon as the CD entered, the light flashed for a second then went dead. Now the tray won't open at all, and the computer brings up an error at bootup that it can't find the CD-rom Sad

Is the best thing to do to force open the door somehow and pull out the pieces?

Haha no Sad
That would've been a much better idea.

I know someone who had a CD explode in the drive once and after (carefully) taking it out and opening it up and removing the pieces, it did work again... Although DVD writers are bloody cheap.

Ha, hilarious story Laughing

The fact that it can't find it at bootup is worrying. Can you open the case and pick the pieces out? Sounds like they might be locked into the mechanism in some way though...

You just don't want to tell the IT gyu do you? Laughing

look on the front, and you'll see a little hole near the open/close button. Stick a pin in there, hard, and push.

This should release the locking mechanism, and then you'll be able to force it open and take out the pieces.

btw, you know CDs spin really really really fast in the drive. How could you possibly think this was a good idea?

Bwhahahahahahahah

Well I didn't think it was a great idea but I was still curious to see what would happen. I thought the pieces would stay in the tray :/

Not the most practical person are you Razz

Just claim it was slightly cracked on the inside of the cd hole, it ran for about 30 seconds then went pop and made a loud clicking noise and stopped really quickly.

New drives are only ~$50 so its not the end of the world.
[quote]
why claim anything? it's not unheard of for them to shatter in drives.

Yeah, no one's actually going to believe you did that, so just say you put a CD in and it no go no more.
