CD Burning Fail

How hard is this to get right? Seriously. I don't know if it's a hardware issue, or a Vista issue, or a drivers issue, codecs maybe? ( )

Anyway, I usually burn CDs in either Windows Media Players or Explorer (I took Nero off when it put all this extra junk on my PC) and they work on CDJ's maybe 40% of the time. Some of them will have a few tracks that work at the very start before it shits itself.

Any ideas?

This, but if its not an issue with the CDJ's its probably a fucked burner.

Neros good, expecially for ISO and stuff you just have to do a custom install and uncheck everything except Nero Express / Nero Burning Rom and maybe Vision if you wanna do Video / DVD encoding.

Yeah, Ive tried 2-3 different kinds of CDR and had exactly the same issue.

I'll be pissed if it's a hardware thing, it's the second damn drive (same model) I've put in there

I'll put Nero back on when I get home and see how that goes, and particular brands of CD-R that people favour?

OK, solooks like it may be a hardware issue after all. My PC failed to play a burned CD last night instead revving up to stupid speeds and being all noisy and clunky. Chucked in my laptop and it played fine

Next question: is there anything in the way my PC is set up (software/drivers/anything) that could be fucking the hardware or is likely just fucked hardware to begin with?

It's the second one (same manufacturer) thats gone belly up.

This may not help as I can't give you a conclusive answer, but I once started to feel like cdwriter shittyness was passed on like a virus, plugging fucked hardware to a computer then makes the computer fuck the next bit of hardware or a disc fucks it...

Of course, that doesn't really make any sense and to a large degree bullshit. I just had a bad run. I bought the most expensive (which cost fuck all) DVD/CD writer from a reputable computer store and plugged it in and used reputable media (cheaper stuff you get from the supermarket seemed to have a large fail rate) and never had a problem again.

Except you should not trust optical discs as your only backup because they are faaar from infallible, and, someone I knew once reckoned that if you fill them up the data on the outside is more likely to get corrupted. Dunno if there was anything to what he said, but mechanically speaking it sounds possible.

As for the CDR thing, it does sound plausible, though I'm not totally sure why the data burned last would be the most susceptible to corruption...

Bearing in mind I'm probably talking utter bollocks and when I wrote it I was really thinking of DVDs, the data burned last would be on the outer part of the disc and therefore more susceptible to any wobble or imprecision in the mechanics of the drive.

My educated guess is that it is hardware. I don't think software is going to cause those problems.

Can't help you with current suggestions as I hardly use desktop hardware anymore, but Pioneer or Plextor was where the solid products always used to be.

Is Lightscribe a brand or a feature? Cause mine is wocked.

Yeah tis a feature, but both of mine that have failed have been Lightscribe drives. Perhaps this is ze problem?

Nope, mine are sata too... weird. Maybe it is the media, but that playback issue it had was a strange one as well

maybe you just got a dud, or it got dropped before you bought it.
