I've been weighing it up lately - what do you guys reckon..

Cars are a form of personalised transport, but are fast becoming a very costly option. In fact, they would be considered one of the worst investments:

The petrol is expensive.
The tyres.
The oil.
The servicing.
The wof.
The registration.
The insurance.
The chance of it all being stolen in an instance, the lot of it - and the fact that it happens too damn often.
..and most of all, the initial outlay of money.

In fact, sometimes it almost seems that for the 3-4k that you spend on a vehicle vs how often you'd actually use it for personal transport (ie. not going back and fourth from work, but going to events or seeing people) it'd almost seem cheaper to use the Bus system, or in some cases catching taxis.

The other day I seriously considered getting a push bike for transport around town because it'd be cost effective, low maintainance, and highly reliable.

How many of you believe the bus system is actually efficient enough for daily use? It's certainly cheap enough - and with the advent of www.rideline.co.nz and 3G technology on cell phones bus time tables are becoming more and more accessible..

So is it really just getting over the tradition of requiring a car for personal transport, (because we sure as hell have managed without one growing up) or do you think there still is a place for cars in today's society?

Your thoughts?

I like my car and I know all too well that it is bloody expensive to run.

Ideally i'd like to get a runabout car for about 1k, which can pass an AA check and get it's wof/reg easily.

I live too far away from town to bike, the bus is still expensive for me. The form of transport I LOVE using is the ferry, going to and fro to uni each day....so nice and relaxing on a sunny day, makes you fully appreciate Auckland. I've been thinking, I could ride down to the ferry, then ride to uni and do the same coming back...but i'm too lazy. Razz

I want to 'modify' my current car, so if I didn't drive it much, and used a runabout car/public transport I could probably save a fair bit of cash (which i'd no doubt spend on doing up my current car lol Laughing )

Cars rule. My car rules. Smile
Buses suck.
SpeedBikes are cool.
Scooters are semi-cool.

The Christchurch bus service is the dogs bollocks and I don't really see any point in getting a car except for carting large amounts of gear around the place which can be a pain. Very Happy

Auckland bus sysetem sucks arse soooo hard.
And at the end of the day taxis are NOT a viable option from where i live. However i will be taking the ferry to uni next year due to lack of parking.
Otherwise i love my cars too much to give them up, its my second girlfriend Froggy

That's an idea for "Co-ze".. lol, suggest it in the 80's thread. Haha..

I was thinking Push-bike would be more ideal for short distance travel. And on those summer days you want to escape riding all the way to Mission Bay etc from the City.. I think that'd be pretty wicked. Smile

lol, BOOM BOX!!! That's what I need!

Was given something today about the northen busway which is under construction Confused

Car, you have more freedom and can go anywhere you want, if you have gas etc Razz

Busses are aiight, but are rather expensive if you want to head to the Shore from West etc, bus fares are $1.50 a stage for adults now Shocked

Bikes are sweet, both push and motor bikes Very Happy thing is you cant really take your mates for a cruise anywhere

Scooters are pretty sweet and you only need your learners for a scooter under a certain cc, still wouldnt have one, they're loud, slow, cant transport people, and no sounds Razz handy for getting from a to b though

We should be trying to get more people to use the bus, I doubt raising the bus fare will do this

I would have no problem with the bus system if the bus times were a bit more frequent. But still, theres nothing like having your own car. Cool

As I'm soon leaving home, my parents cars will no longer be available for me to drive so I have to think of a reliable means of transport and this is what i'm going to get Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy
