I see Carl Cox is playing Rhythm & Vines this year and just wondering if there is ANY chance that Sandwiches would consider booking him for a gig while he is here?? I would pay $100+ to see him in Wellington. I reckon he is the best DJ ever, and so entertaining!

Heard he was here for a while too. Doing a motocycle tour of the South Island either before or after R&V's
[quote]
He'd be locked out of playing anywhere else other than R & V.

If that's the case then that's rubbish!

He's never agreed to being locked into that in NZ before.

I doubt want to spend that kind of money in doing so. If someone like Sandwiches approached him about playing there I highly doubt he would decline!! Check out www.dancetrippin.tv of him in action at Space Ibiza....brilliant!

If they could afford him mind you, which I'm sure they probably could, but timing etc, promotion etc, who knows, a big ask. But if that happend, I would gladly pay $100 to see him for one night only, even if it's a school night. C

ould you imagine, Carl Cox at Sandwiches, it would be fucken rammed.

No thats commercial sense.

Why not have a drawcard like that at something like RnV and drag people from all over the country, they will make a killing just by NOT having him available anywhere else.

Otherwise having him play elsewhere, for RnV, would dilute the pulling power he would have.

That is also true actually. I wonder if that's why the real big headliners at Big Day out never do sideshows in New Zealand, yet they do in Australia? I'm sure it would also be because of the population size, eg not enough people to support two different gigs featuring the same headliner, but I would do both depending on the headliner.

Pretty Standard practice really. Its the music business

Most of the acts for R&V are locked out. Tried to get onto a couple

Actually most of the acts in the Boiler Room do side gigs.

Goldie
Roni Size
Carl Cox

All come to mind....

with most acts that come through they have a night here at best.. then it back to aussie or further flung shores, as their tours are usually already booked by the time we get the offer.

the problem with having someone like carl cox play in welli is that we dont have the population to pull off a gig like this. his fee would not be small, and i know some of you would pay a hundy to see him play, but the general populace would not. to them he is just some dj. this is why we tend to miss the 'huge' acts in welli, we just dont have the numbers to make it financially viable for promoters. a sad but true state of the music scene here. would love to be able to change it, coz he is teh man behind teh decks! Have seen him play twice now. My first "dance party" in fact. He played at QBH in melbourne and he was awesome! Got me hooked. Saw him play at BDO in Sydney this year, wasn't as good but thats prob coz of the crowd.

Sideshow at Sammies would be awesome, so intimate.

Yeah exactly what I was thinking. Some of you maybe willing to pay $100 each but I don't think enough people would be willing to pay that much to fill up Sandwhiches. Some of my friends that aren't really into dance music seem to have heard of him though. Still I don't think they'd be willing to pay $100 which is probably neccessary. Or reduce the price and have it in another venue with a bigger capacity. That way clip more tickets but still get the same amount of money overall (or more?)

And then there are the contractual obligations that others spoke of.

yeah, as much as we would love to see him play, would we want to be jammed in, dnb steez, unable to dance, just to hear him? i think not.

at the end of the day, the late 90s were the hey day of lads like him, carl craig, derek carter and so on. if you want to hear the big boys play now, then aussie is where you want to be.

not sure on the contractual front, but we had dj t play for us last year after r&v and there were a few lads that could have had M.A.N.D.Y, had they picked up a txt lol.

you also have to remember that nz is a piece of paradise for some of these boys, their life is touring and playing. they get here and are blown away by our beautiful environment, downtime is a-callin. great for them, but harder for us lol.

the question is.. would you put $100k on the line to hear him play? as for me, if i win lotto, ill get back to you Wink

agree with you guys...it's a nice thought you!! I saw him at Big Day Out and he's amazing to watch! Will have to go and see him in Ibiza next year instead.

I've been at Sandwiches when it was jam packed - Nick Warren springs to mind - it actually sux when you can't dance and just sway...you don't mean to elbow people while dancing and that gets annoying!!

Carl Cox just seems to rocks whatever place he plays in...he is by far the most energetic DJ I have seen.
