Carl Cox furious with Gatecrasher
Last updated 25 June 2002

Carl Cox is furious with Gatecrasher organisers as he claims they pulled his global arena just two hours before the festival began.

He says he only agreed to do the night because of a special tent which he's been designing over the last five months to make sure sound and visuals were perfect.

Organisers told fans it was down to the tent leaking but Carl is not satisfied and has said 'their sheer unprofessionalism is disgusting'.

carl cox, gatecrasher and leaky tents.??? is this at all of interest to anyone. has this become some sort of womans weekly form since i have been gone. sounds awefully trivial.

oh my. i didnt realise that carl cox was such a sell out mother fucker. is that the kind of scene he is tied up with these days. money grubbing ego maniac. im not surprised he got shafted by the gatecrasher corporation. more fool him..

He had a good lineup for that w/ people like Umek, Valentino, Green Velvet/Cajmere, Mistress Barbara, Luke Slater and others.

I read another site which said he was mad because GC wanted him to play with a completely different lineup at the last minute, ditching the above names...

Anyhow, I don't think hes a sell out, he was trying to bring good music to a very corporate festival, and when his ideas were compromised he wouldnt play, doesn't sound like a sell-out to me. If only NZ Gatecrashers had lineups like the above you guys would be going to them too...

no shit, thats interesting. i guess it rings some truth. i wanted to go to 2 tribes but only for jeff mills, the levels we will stoop to for our little tek fix. i didnt go though because i new to large mainstream inviroment would end up detracting from the music. what a culture clash. I would go to gatecrasher even if it promised a techno line up, also for the same reason and to much risk of a last minute line up change etc. i guess it is comendible for carl cox to try and bring techno to the masses although i would have thought he'd learned long ago that it is a waiste of time. i dont think main stream culture will ever be in suport of techno, nor do i think techno will ever target the main stream market. techno seems to demand more understanding than youre average punter can be bothered with. most people who go out regularly are only realy after sex and getting waisted. that is only my observation though. i do take back the slanderous coments i made above, a bit rash in hinesight. thanx for your input bn1.

oops, i ment i 'wouldnt' go to gatecrasher if it promised techno.... mistake.

Happy to provide a little more info Smile

I don't think you have to trouble yourself too much about it, GC would never have a techno lineup in nz, not a big enough market, maybe in Australia.

Taken from Coxies Site, Im not a techno head as such sorry guys if it was old news but i do like Carl Cox's stuff and have a few live sets.... anyway some moring reading Smile

This arena had been our sole project for the last few months. I had a passion in creating something genuinely different for the festival, to give something back to the punters, something that would justify the £45 price ticket alone. It also cost us a hell of a lot of money as it was meant to hold 3000 punters, it had a carefully constructed wooden rain-proof dance floor and the best sound system in the world.

The story actually goes back further than this. Last year I played the GCSSS festival and swore never to do it again as the sound was terrible, no one could see the DJ box and I got aload of emails from kids saying it was the worst they had ever seen me play. After that I refused ever to play again at Gatecrasher, but the organisers courted me with my own tent, and promised we would work together to create an arena I was happy with.

I spent the whole year talking this up to the press, and everyone I knew. I also managed to get a great bill from all around the world, including Umek, Valentino, Misstress Barbara and Green Velvet. It was a real step forward for not just me, but the whole clubbing / festival crossover.

Cracks first started to appear this week when the organisers announced that we would have to share our tent with Groove Armada and the Chemicals, because apparently two of the tents were damaged at Purple in the Park and they could not find replacements. We said OK, and went away to think about the right times that they should play so as to keep the flow right in the tent.

After meetings all week we finally thought we'd sorted it Friday. I awoke Saturday expecting my dream - the Carl Cox Global Arena - to come true after 6 months planning. I then got a call at midday callously saying 'with a gun to their heads' a decision had been made to keep the Chemical Generation Arena and diminish the Global Arena. The organisers were telling disgruntled clubbers who had travelled from afar especially to hear me that the arena was cancelled as the tent had a leak. These same clubbers have been demanding a full refund.

I was overcome with absolute disbelief and disgust. Their only alternative they offered me was to play after the Chemicals but without our bill of carefully selected DJs from around the world. Their sheer unprofessionalism is disgusting. I could not agree to play and leave all of my arena DJs I had booked to stand and watch. This would have been unfair on them. We were told by an employee in the cash office they had sold 22,000 tickets in advance, and only had 200 people purchase tickets on the day.

This is not going to deter us. The Arena will happen very soon. Watch this space. The Global Arena is alive, despite the best efforts of Gatecrasher. This is just a chink in our armour. I'm doing Space in Ibiza over the summer so let the good vibes be there.

dam dude, they sure did shaft you. sorry to hear it. yet my centiments still hold about gatecrasher co, they have there own agenda to meet which still is aimed for the mainstream masses. alas, it would as you say have been a big step from the crossover perspective and a big step for techno. those are some wicked acts you had lined up. i eat my previous words. if those acts were garenteed then it would only have been the cost that would have stopped me. that line up would have atracted a very different crowd for such a festival. big ups for your vision. down with gatecrasher.
