Car advice...needed please

Im looking at getting a car this week.... as my honda is just fuked and is old....I want to spend 8k and want a hatchback ....I was thinking a Mazda 2 or something...I want something cute not nanna...Can anyone recommend a good car....and a good dealership in Auckland...thats a bunch.

Why do you want to spend 8K? you should be able to get a decent car for 5~6 - look for cars around 100-120K ,drive them to 170~180 and repeat.

Mazdas are good cars - not quite as good as toyotas but people seem to want a whole lot more for a toyota than is reasonable. Wheels on wairau are good though they specialise in low k cars.

What about Rav 4s are they ok,,,bit soccer mum but I need to get a more grown up vehicle....

Rav4's are generally terrible from a 4x4 perspective... They will guzzle petrol !

You should consider fuel consumption as well, smaller cars with smaller engines use less fuel and tend to be more economical

This is what I'd do: get a car person ('cept that person would be me) and tour Hammer Auctions one Saturday. Save several thousand. Don't think it's called Hammer anymore though...

And yeah, don't buy a gas guzzler, limited resource, fucking expensive, all that. Cars... just get one that works and costs as little as possible.

Get a RAV4 if thats what you want, they're only 2L right? So will use a bit more than your 16 Honda, but their not exactly Holdens. Both my last cars were 2L. You could go to the auctions one night to check out whats going for what (Turners), to get a bit of perspective, but they have good price guides on their website anyway.

At the end of the day one of the key things is how many K's whatever you get has done, you should be able to spend 8K and get something thats done between 60~100k and still get something you like.

My final piece of advice... you should have bought my BMW, even though it wasn't a hatch

A Rav 4 will cost you about 3k a year for petrol if you do ~14000ks
A Vitz/Yaris will cost you 1.5k a year for petrol if you do ~14000ks.

I'm not disagreeing with your figures, its just at the end of the day you have to drive a Vitz/Yaris.. not that I personally think a RAV4 is much better.. but if QT likes them then hey...

Infact I'd probably recommend you get a Mazda 2 over a RAV..

Most people dont need a 2l, 1.8 and even some 1.6s are plenty of power for most driving these days.... though some cheap cars have auto transmissions that kill a 1.6L

Mazda (which includes some fords) or Toyota should be your first looking point but theres plenty of options. Some of the USell places might be worth a look too, especially to get an idea of what it is you like the look of.

I disagree. 100K is about the magic line where shit starts going wrong with the car and you have to start replacing everything. It's far better to get something that has done 60k and not have to spend all that extra cash replacing shit that's old and busted straight away.

Biggest thing QT is to make sure you get the car checked out before buying. A mechanic will tell you if it's likely you're going to be spending heaps of cash replacing parts any time soon.

Subaru's tend to break down a lot so can be expensive to maintain. You want something that's reliable.

The Starlet will handle it better than the Subaru. Impreza's are heavy for their size, and even the 1.5's are guzzlers compared to other 1.5's. I've driven a 1.5 Impreza, it's....not good.

I like the Toyota Starlet though it's cute and I drive slow so 1300cc doesn't bother me.. as long as it'll get me to Manghawai that's about as up hill as I'd go maybe once a year.

Nothing at all. As long as you don't expect to go drifting ir drag racing in it. 1300cc cars are generally very economical.

lol. 100k doesn't mean "shit starts going wrong" it's just the line where some important maintenance items are needed - cam belt and associated works being the obvious one. That's the big, expensive thing she needs to watch out for, or looks for a Nissan with a chain driven cam (lots of the 1.6 and up Pulsars et al have that).

Modern cars handle vastly higher mileage than their predecessors' with no dramas, assuming proper maintenance.

And yeah, you'll have no dramas with a 1300 Starlet. Yes, the auto will make it suck a bit more, but it will be perfectly serviceable for you. Worst case, you make your left hand do some work and manually shift it down a gear or two on a big hill.

My car started to experience issues after the 100k mark, oil leaks etc. According to the expert in the family it is really common for shit to start happening after a car has done about that mileage. And my car is about the epitome of the modern reliable car.

My honda has done over 250,000ks and I never got it serviced or anything.. so it's my own fault it's fucked.. but it would have still been going good if I didn't treat it like shit.. now it's stored away in my garage until I can be fucked sorting it out. I am such a loser when it comes to cars.

Oh well hopefully Ill get the Starlet so I can start again and look after it... 100,000ks isn't that much if it's been looked after.

Most modern cars will do really well to 200K but it seems to be a problem for some people so its a good idea to sell before 200 if you want value. Of course the older the car the more important how well its been looked after becomes.

Cam belt and water pump around 100K is important and theres some cars that have particular quirks that make themselves evident at certain number of ks - some nissans and mitsis used to have this.

Peugot's aint really cheap for parts. My friend had one and a part inside her door broke, cost her $800. Apparently the same Mitsi part would be $80

Nothing with with "tiptronic", in this case it's simply a conventional auto with the option to shift manually.


BUT - I know of several issues with Mitsi auto's of that era. My brother actually went through one in a Galant, scrapped that car because it wasn't worth the work, then his newer model Galant blew it's gearbox too.


Other than that, FTO's are pretty nice, sporty wee things, but replacing the cambelt on the V6's is a PIG of a job.

Cambelt changed is good! Means you don't need to worry about it for another 100,000km.

Thing is though, that's why you ask people.

There are plenty of cars I'd suggest without hesitation, but that's not what we're doing here. And even then, I'd chime in with known problems.

Personaly I'd be interested in establishing if its been thrashed, its a tiptronic V6 racer and it has what looks like an aftermarket steering wheel and peddels. You need a man to give it a test drive for you before throwing money at the AA

I know I'm not that stupid pretty much all the cars say "wifes run around" etc so it's like whatevs. I don't need a man to test drive it I will give it a good go and I don't mind getting it AA checked it I like it.. it's peace of mind. I'll take whatever he has to say with a grain of salt..

The last car I checked out was a young chick who looked me straight in the face and said she had just gotten it serviced etc.. AA report proved she hadn't had it serviced and it is pissing oil ... lil shore bitch.

It's only a 2l. Mitsi even did 1.8's too, and yeah they are pretty much on par with a regular 2l, with the bonus of having a better torque profile and run really smoothly compared to an equivalent sized 4.

Unlike my 3l guzzler in a large family sized saloon with a thirst for premium and my lead foot enabling it :>

The FTO looks good QT! Tiptronic is handy, and although it's a sample of 1, my old triptronic Lancer of the same age never had problems with it or the transmission. You might get tappit issues tho.. seems to be a common mitzi thing of that era.. but that's more annoying than an actual problem

Yeah as far as Auto goes being tiptronic is a nice bonus
