Can't detect PS/2 Mouse

Getting a "Can't detect PS/2 Mouse" type error on an old P2 PC running windows '98.
Tried reinstalling it using the keyboard but now the keyboard doesn't work either
I just installed the standard PS/2 mouse drivers through "add new hardware" - didn't try anything tricky or anything but I fear it may have fucked the Interrupt settings for the KB - is this likely or unlikely?

Is the MB fried? Best just to ditch it at this stage and get a new box or?

Im not too sure but you could try resetting the bios defaults.

see if the keyboard works in the bios.

Do you even need drivers for old hardware like that? I thought windows picked them up automatically. I just restart and they work.

does it work in safe mode?

i'd go with reseting the bios to default and removing the drivers from windows under safemode, then restarting and windows should pick up the settings automatically. you only need to install special driver if the keyboard or mouse has extra features (ie, scoll wheel, extra buttons, etc)
