The Victoria University gym! It's low-key and the equipment isn't top notch, but for a non-student I think it costs about $200 a year. You can get free consultations to set up a program and stuff, and they do aerobics classes etc.

The facilities are okay, they have about 15 bikes, 3 steppers, 5 rowing machines and then the usual complement of weights machines and free-weights. It's not usually /too/ busy but varies a bit.

Ignore the tough-guy buff boys and you'll be sweet. Razz

Sportswide is good cause you can go any time you want.
Les Mills is a little posey at times but has by far the best programs instructors and equipment and you don't pay the earth for it
Majestic is awesome but pricey.

Best thing to do is check some of the gyms out on the wekends or whenever as only you will know with what you are comfortable with.

Les Mills (while everyone says it is posey, and yes it is!!) is still a great gym. It has fantastic equipment, and great classes which are really consistent because they are not individually coreographed(sp?) by the instructors. Although you may not be interested in classes anyway. But still the equipment is the best. PLus you can usually find memberships adverised for sale in the Trade and Exchange so if you buy one off someone (usually for around $12.00 per week) then that is pretty cheap these days. You just have to not let the posers worry you!! Smile

Yeah, there are posers everywhere, and it's especially bad with the guys. They ones at the Vic gym think they fucken own the place, apparently - and give me strange looks when I'm pumping my ridiculously small weights with my thin, small body. Very Happy

Fuck 'em. Smile

haha!!! Good on you. I always feel a little intimidated in the cardio room at Les Mills as well, but I jsut throw on my minidisk and try and shut out the pain of the treadmill, pretty soon I don't even realise anyone else is there. I was really impressed with the instructor at Les Mills the other night when I took my bfriend to a pump class and he was clearly clueless. The guy came up and shook his hand and helped him set up the correct weights and directed him the whole way theough and them came and talked to him afterwards to see how he found it - I know it's his job and all but I was still really impressed wtih his friedndliness. I reckon we need more people like that in scary plces like gyms!

sportswide, not posey and you can go in the middle of the night if you want, they have a pool, sauna, spa... you can take your friends too cos you have a swipe card :o)
[quote]
Are the pool, sauna and spa free to users? Cos that would kick ass. Razz

Definately go with Les Mills. Sportswide is a dump!
[quote]
unknown - so what if sportswide isn't flash, at least you can go when you want.

yeah but you can go to Les Mills whenever you want as well. In most gyms at peak times you can never get equipment like treadmills but even at 5.30ish on a week day you can get a tready at Les.
