Can I get into trouble using open .nz http proxies that i find on lists on the web to use to download big files to get around my cap?
[quote]
i presume you mean your international cap?

and you mean one that have been hacked or proxies that are intentionally open?

bolie, Only if you don't post them here for everyone to use Very Happy

most probably not... it's usually whoever runs that server that's liable (even if it's been hacked)... mind you, these laws change all the time, so ya never know...
[quote]
I *think* if you know or should have reasonably known a server has been hacked and get gain out of it you can be liable in civil law. The rest gets a bit muddier.
[quote]
im talking not hacked...as in some admin or something has left it open by accident or forgot to close it
[quote]
how do you know?
[quote]
you will get fined and go to jail if you cant pay...

I deal with this stuff every day Razz

Hey. If I wander along the road and see that someone has left a window open, it's cool if I just pop inside and eat some of their food and maybe run up a few toll calls on their phone account isn't it? Razz

lol hacking doesnt have to be hard to get in, it just refers to someone having access to a 3rd party computer without permission, if you look at the files of a computer over the internet/network you have effectively hacked it in the eyes of the law so my answer to going through open proxies on people you dont have permission from would be...illegal

but hey, its fun Very Happy

If you really want to get picky "hacking" has nothing to do with breaking into computers. It's an old school programming term that has been warped over the years to be applied to illegal activities. Razz

lol harvey im not quite old enough to remember that Wink
[quote]
thanks for that harvey, I read "hacking" and was about to make the same point......

I think Trance_ra was thinking of h4X0ring. Only nerds think of "hacking" to be anything different. Cool
[quote]
well, spank my ass and call me a nerd then Laughing

what Trance_ra was calling 'hacking' I tend to think of as 'cracking'.....
[quote]
was talking to some dude a wee while ago that if you find an ssh or telnt server and try and get a username/pass IF!!! at the login point it DOESNT!! say something along the lines of "If you are not authorized to use this service...etc" then its fine Mr. Green With proxies I gues its a little different
[quote]
i tend to think of cracking as getting around security or other issues to do with coding in software rather than hAx0r1ng a computer Laughing

Hacking vs. Cracking eh? Well there goes number 3 of the top ten discussions I never thought I'd see on biggie.

Anyone up for GPL vs FreeBSD licence discussion now?
[quote]
well each has their own advantage but hey who wouldnt say no to the free licencing Razz
