Im a little confused over the paper work and the online site isnt offering much help, I only stayed for about 6 months and worked for 3 of them.
Has anyone else gone through this process before and can give me some advice?- it would be greatly appreciated.

Yes, I've already done one tax return and I'm about to do the one for the part of the second year I worked. The tax year runs 1 Jan to 31 Dec. The website that has all the tax forms and info is http://www.cra-arc.gc.ca/. You'll want to click on "2006 Tax package" under the Individuals section. It has all the forms listed by province. It also has a section for "Non-residents of Canada" but I had problems figuring out if I counted as a resident or not. I called the international tax office and they told me which forms I needed. Their number is +1 613 952 3741 and they accept collect calls. They're based in Ontario and work normal office hours so you'll need to figure out the time difference to get through during working hours.

I found it quite complicated and confusing but I managed in the end. You only need to declare the Canadian income, don't worry about any money you earned overseas. I lived and worked in Alberta for 4 months of 2005 so the forms I needed were -
T1 General 2005
Schedule 1 (Revised) Federal Tax T1-2005
AB428 - Alberta Tax and Credits

I also worked 2 weeks in 2006 and I'm in the process of trying to figure out which forms I need.

It's best to wait until you get your T4 slips posted to you otherwise you have to try to figure it out using payslips. I did this for my 2005 tax return and got it wrong, then I had to fill out a T1 Adjustment form after I'd got the T4s.

I reckon the best thing is to call the international tax office and ask them which forms you need. Tell them when you worked and when you left the country and they'll tell you what you need to fill out.

Oh, and it's compulsory to do a tax return if you earned money in Canada. If you don't file the return by 30 April 2007 you get charged penalties, as well as interest on any amounts you owe.

I checked www.taxback.com and you get more money back if you do it yourself. If I remember right, taxback.com said I would get $90ish but I did it myself and I got back about $190.
