Hi all...well after 6 years of clubbing, 100's of compilation albums and a deep love of dance music I have decided to buy some decks. I have no desire to be the next Sasha or Tenaglia...but am getting sick of the extent of the control over my music being stopping the CD player and inserting another one. I need to MIX!!!! ARGGGGHHHHH.

Right...a couple of querries for you knowledgable folk out there.

1) Should I go for CD or for Turntables. The only advantage I can see is that I own a shiteload of good music on CD....however, these are all comp albums...then probably not ideal for fucking around with....Thoughts.
2) Where is the best place to purchase. I will definately be looking at HP due to financial constraints bought on by numerous bad habits. So anywhere with decent HP deals would be great.
3) What should I look at spending for a decent 'basic' set up.

Cheers in advance all you fine music people.

I suggest you wait 2 months and see if you're still interested then.

Or do what I did, and buy the tunes before the decks. 'Cos having the decks is useless when you can only afford 2 pieces of vinyl to practise on. Just try scab up someone elses decks, or go to someone elses that has a set. They're fuckin' pricey - Think about it like buying a car. When you buy decks and a mixer, though, you can't have anything but the BEST. No shit.

I had a similar delemia..
Your've got 1000's of CD's, so whats the point of starting your entre music collection over again when you could just get a CD mixer?

To be honest, I have nothing against people who use CD mixers... I'm just not inspired by them and I'd feel cheated if I was to ever go to a club or an event where a DJ was using a 'CD mixer'..

They look easy to use (I'm waiting for a slap in the face soon) - but to be honest, even though the cost and the idea of having to start a brand new vinyl collection is daungting... - Its so well worth it - and you'll realise it after a couple of months...

I know that I need the ability to mix music...I have been waiting years to do it...just procrastination always gets in the way. Well, procrastination is over and I am ready. Many people have commented on my music collection and the amount of enjoyment I get out of it and are amazed I didn't get some years ago.

As for vinyl...a friend of mine who bought a lot of music back from the UK and has since stopped playing has offered me his tunes....not my ideal collection but will do for a start and some fun.

One of the best things about having a lot of music and having listened intently for years is that I know what I need in the way of music. Hell, even for a start...pick my 20 top tunes off CD's I own...take the other tracks on those records and I am away. I earn well enough to keep topping up.

go for it bro. i got my decks about 4mnths go & i love them to bits. even moved out of my apartment in Parnell cos of them (the neighbour didn't like music). i got my technics 1200s from Hill&Stewart for about $1200 each on HP, well worth it.
the only downside as the unbelieve addiction u get to purchasing vinyl, it's a VERY expensive habit.
if u want a mixer i might be willing to sell mine so i can upgrade - cecil_mustapop@hotmail.com

Get some pioneer CDJ1000's.. that is what you need, all the features of vinyl but in a cd player!

Atleast go and try some out,.. no point in getting turntables if you own a whole bunch of cd's.. make good use of all the money you spent on them
[quote]
How much are you looking at for them...CDJ1000's?

Cheers

the thing is tho cdj1000's are retailing for like
$3000 EACH. u could get both ur turntables for this price & half a mixer. altho u have to spend money on vinyl. I'm think of getting 1 so i can play the occasional cd but i don't thingk paying $6000 just for cd turntables is really worth it.

Just had a go on these new Pioneer Cd mixers, very nice! I like that Jet, Zip, and Wah effect you can use with the jog shuttle. We will be getting them for the Lighthouse in Palmy soon replacing the Stantons.

Try trade and exchange, DJ stores, BPM, etc. and pick up some second hand Technics 1200s. You should get a pretty solid pair for about $1500 or maybe even less. The thing about these suckers is they are so fucking reliable, so second hand is sweet as + they don't depreciate that much, so you can always get some new ones if you want later. Might be idea to check them out with someone who knows a little about them, just to check pitch controller, etc is OK.

As for mixers, I'd go for a good one. It's worth the investment. A cheap one will just piss you off too much.

I remember everyone telling me when I bought mine - Wait and buy some vinyl first. I went ahead and bought them anyway - no regrets. You can always build up your collection later and borrow tunes off your mates. I'd rather have decks and few tunes than tunes and nothing to play them on.

true, theres no point having vinyl if youve got nothing to play them on aye...get a loan from the bank, then post requests for someone that can help you with buying new decks cheeply, i might know someone that can help you out there, ie: stanton str880's for $...... or technic 1200's for..... haha, fuck retail bro!!

=)
