It’s less than four weeks until the Bugg’n Tour hits town and heavyweights of hip hop Method Man, Redman, DJ Premier of Gang Starr, ‘Godfather of Noyze’ Rahzel, DJ JS-1 of the ‘Rock Steady Crew’ and block-party DJ, DJ Kool take the stage.
On Friday September 23, the North Shore Events Centre will now play host to the four-and-a-half-hour show which looks set to be the biggest and best hip hop line-up NZ has ever seen! Local support confirmed for this one-off event comes from DJ Logikal, Frontline and Deceptikonz. Tickets are on sale now.
Method Man is someone who needs little introduction. Ever since he seized the spotlight on Wu Tang Clan’s 1993 epic, ‘Enter the Wu Tang’, he has been in our faces and in our ears with solo projects, guest spots and on the big screen. Nice on the mic, easy on the eyes, hot on stage, cool on screen, and with a lyrical style that is both unpredictable yet instantly recognisable, Method Man is one of the ultimate rapper’s in the game.
Meth’s partner in crime, the New-Jersey native and funk doctor himself, Redman has been in the hip hop game for the past decade with a slew of quality releases to his name.
Redman’s four solo albums: ‘Whut? Thee’ ‘Dare Iz A Darkside’, ‘Muddy Waters’, ‘Doc's Da Name 2000’ and two collaboration’s ‘Blackout‘ with Method Man and ‘El Nino’ with Def Squad have placed this rapper in the hip-hop hall of fame, where only the few artists who remain consistent, reside.
Known as an artist who pushes the boundaries and breaks the rules, fans will be pleased to hear that a new album from Redman titled ‘Red Gone Wild’ is scheduled for release later this year.
DJ Premier is undoubtedly one of the most important trackmaster’s of the 90’s, with very few other producer’s out there qualified to test this status. His style is distinctive, aggressive and raw; Besides helming tracks for his main concern, Gang Starr, since their 1989 debut Premier's productions have appeared on many of the East Coast's most important records including, Nas' ‘Illmatic’, the Notorious B.I.G.'s ‘Ready to Die’ Jay-Z's ‘Reasonable Doubt’, and Mos Def's ‘Black on Both Sides’.
Master performer and human beatbox extraordinaire Rahzel, who is perhaps better known for his affiliation with The Roots, is an MC that specializes in beatboxing. An art which is often referred to as the ‘fifth element’ of hip hop culture, Rahzel has expanded the style in a unique way by creating vocal beats while singing lyrics simultaneously! He has performed and worked with artists as diverse as Bjork, ex-Faith No More front man Mike Patton, Roni Size and The Crystal Method amongst others.
Rahzel’s musical partner and DJ on the tour, DJ JS-1 have both been inducted into the ranks of the world famous ‘Rock Steady Crew’ – a seminal crew founded nearly 30 years ago in the Bronx, NYC. DJ JS-1 teamed up with Rahzel around ’99 and together they form undoubtedly the best beatbox / DJ duo you could ever hope to see and hear!
DJ’ing alongside Redman is DJ Kool – an original block-party aesthetic led DJ who provides a fusion of feel-good go-go music to get the party rockin’! A veteran of Washington D.C.'s go-go circuit Kool worked as a warm-up DJ for ‘Rare Essence’ during the early-to-mid-'80s releasing his album ‘Music Ain’t Loud Enuff’ in the early 90’s.
