On the back of this speculation about the resurgence where it has been established that the productions levels are soaring again and a whole raft of new dudes are carving out their niches, what new tunes have you bought/enjoyed lately...

I picked up 4 new tunes this week (plus the Stantons - Still Here):

Farace - After The Storm
Farace - Light Shines Down
Phrakture - Fall In Line

^^ Wicked progressive breaks

And Headflux & Tom Wilkes - Basscake < epic 303 hook acid breaks. MASSIVE tune Very Happy

You rekon? I wouldnt say thats the case at all. There are a handful of guys still making cutting edge stuff but its not a patch on what it was 4 and even 2 years ago. Its so hard to find tunes with carefully constructed breaks, no one puts in the effort anymore

Thats barely breaks, only just..... now Robosapiens - Acid Reign (AMB Remix)
thats an acid breaks tune

If you ask me, its guys like Beta, Mesmer and some of Karl Savs tunes that Im liking at the moment... this big beat feel coming back into some of their tracks is cool. Im all over it like a fat kid on a cupcake

Heh, tomato/potato. It's definitely breaks by my definition Razz

Nope, it's not what it was 4 years ago. I think it lost it's way in between then and now. Mind you, I had lost interest and wasn't really listening 2 years ago so I'm happy to be corrected on that.

We were talking about Beta in the breaks resurgence thread. Hes definitely on my list of dudes to watch, massive productions! Been watching a few of the prog breaks dudes as well, that's the stuff that's really grabbed my attention (also in the resurgence thread) Music

Will have to get Karl to send me a few of his tunes, I've heard a couple bits and pieces but they've been dubstep. Mesmer I'll definitely look into.

As for the big beat feel... you can keep it Razz

def with aspark on this one..

karl sav is owning shit at the moment on the prog breaks tip. been loving everything he's doing.

best part is its a bit tougher than what 'prog breaks' was. its just layer on layer on layer.

karl is coming back over in october too Wink

Cheers for the props guys.

Chaos Theory - Dubstep tunes? Ive only done one dubstep tune and that was the one with Apex. Check out WoNK - Nasty Dog (Karl Sav remix), Calerway - Imaginary Friend( Karl Sav remix) and my soon to be/recently released remix of Mars - Samuari. All of those should be on Beatport.

All my early releases weren't on the prog tip, but pretty much everything IH ave done in the last 12 months (most of which is still to be released) has been on the progy tip with the exception of a couple of tunes. Pretty much the direction Im going in from now on .

Coming up I have a collab I am working on with Beta, and also just got sent the parts to remix Mesmer - Le Fued Food which came out on evenflow about 3 years ago.

Can't wait to come over again in October , not working at the moment so will be in the studio from now pretty much until I come over so will have lots of new shit to play Very Happy. Proper Bo n Ting.

Its that sort of sound that derailed the genre in the first place. Once things got ploddy, it was a hop skip and a jump to electro and now what i just refer to as club music, which that tune you posted fits into nicely.

There were some really great tracks out between 04 and 07. Its almost like there was a last ditch attempt to push the envelope, but it didnt hold. I think in terms of the ploddy sound, it peaked around this time. AMB 50hz, hexadecimal, Elite Force was on fire. Lostep released their album, ibreaks had some huge releases, so did Sinister. Rogue Element was still making some breaks, General Midi was in fine form.... the list goes on.

I think its easy to get excited by some decent tunes popping up because there is just so much nonsense floating about and its been stale for so long. But to those of us that have been living off the nipple of this genre for the last 9 years its got a long way before its back to being righteous, and by all accounts I wouldnt call it a resurgence, just that the artists youve been noticing have been slowly popping up out of the shadows left by the true heroes of the scene. These artists have been making tunes for ages, its just that the level of production was so much higher before, it was hard to get noticed.

In saying all that, I do get excited when I hear some of the new prog stuff coming through. Aeron Aether is great, when his tunes arent too trancy, they are immaculately produced, and he has a detial to his breaks that is better than any of the other prog breaks guys at the moment. Alex Rise also had some killer tunes out around 2007, you should check him out.

I think the big beat influence is where the magic lies. Its all about the break and bass driven distortion funk.

Looking forward to seeing what happens with the label Karl. I think if anything, all this crap flooding the net is doing one good thing, it means that any track with just a hint of difference will stick out and get noticed

Aspark - I used to be one that would say " the tunes are no longer as good as they were from 03 - 05 (widely considered the golden years) but after ripping all my vinyl recently with tunes circa 1996 - 2007 I realised it is just simply a case of less quality control. With the lower costs of releasing digital only (from a label point of view) more ugly ducklings are getting through because there really isn't any more big wigs in distro knocking back tunes for release. Some examples of tunes that never got released due to distro knocking them back at the last hurdle, and I actually really like these tunes but for what ever reason they were never released (in these forms) : Isy - Chickyboom (with deibeat remix on the flip - Deibeat actually re worked his remix and re - released it 3 years later as "Beatroopers" , Autobots remix of Pendulums Painkiller never saw the light of day , again I thought it was good enough to be released , heck even with the Autobots name on it they would have still sold heaps.

With no quality control, leads to more and more shit coming out, meaning you have to look harder and deeper for stuff that you like. The production quality is still there, even compared to older releases, especially with the older and more established labels.

With the digital age now, its no longer as big of a chore sifting through crates of vinyl to find that Gem.
[quote]
yeah totally, and there are a few guys that flip my switches as Ive said, but in terms of creative uniqueness, the artists are few are far between. There havnt been any groundbreaking ideas happening in production with breaks for a long time, and thats the main difference. I was probably wrong in pointing at quality of production. Its the ideas and the new direction that is lacking.

I think the buzz that was around before, fuelled this self perpetuating creativity, and artists started trying to better each other. and so we kept seeing new idea after new idea.... I havnt seen that happening as of late.

Oh heh, that means I've been giving you partial credit for a bunch of Apex's tunes, sorry Shane (still waiting by the way Froggy )!

Will jump on beatport and have a listen, as I mentioned earlier tis the prog breaks business that really blows my skirt up. Probably because I have always loved both genres independently so any crossover was always massive for me Music

You come out to Melbourne often by the way?

This I totally agree with as well. In fact I was having a rant about this in the house forum on ITM a couple days ago. It's a flooded market and (quality of the tune itself aside) with the proliferation of the mp3 and cheap headphones, the sound quality doesn't need to stack up either. Tunes don't need to be engineered or mastered the way they used to when things were being pushed onto vinyl so tracks have become a disposable commodity item. The price of distribution falling that has been much lauded as putting the control back in the hands of artists and their consumers has had the highly unfortunate side effect of every man and his dog wanting a slice of the action and throwing themselves into a career in the music industry.

Don't get me wrong, I am all for creative control being taken out of the hands of a few key monopoly holders who milk artists for all they're worth, but I do wonder if this has actually been the major coup that everyone (myself included) was waiting for.

Frankly, it's little wonder people have vitually no hesitation to pirate music, theres little value proposition any more. And I mean no disrespect to the producers and label owners in this thread, I myself am both, but sadly the people that actually do give a shit about their art are drowned out in the hubbub of the wailing masses.

mate ive been meaning to get to Melbs for ages, just dates haven't suited for either myself or the promoters I have been in contact with when ever we have been available, the biggest hurdle was more so the flight from Perth to Melbs, now that I am permanantly in Brisbane, that is no longer an issue. I will definitely be down there in the near future.

Also psytrance is one of the most innovative genres around at the moment, there is some spectaular stuff coming out drawing from a massive range of influences. It's actually a very very interesting scene to watch Wink
