The one thing about the modern greats - Tendulkar, Lara, and Ponting - is that they've faced shit bowling.

Someone like Geoff Boycott, who only averaged 47, but had to face some astonishing attacks... might go up the list when you factor that in

The other thing is, stats don't tell the full story. How many of Lara's "great" innings were played in tame draws? How many times did he actually win a game? That's far more important than scoring 400 not out on a track that's harder than concrete

I'm not saying he was crap, I'm just saying he wasn't as great as some people made out, and I think with time that will be recognised by most people

Lara would have faced some great bowlers in his time. Akram, Younis, Warne, McGrath.

IIRC Lara broke the world record for a test innings twice, did the same for a 1st class innings, including the incredible heights of hitting 500*, average of 53 in test cricket in a pretty terrible West Indies team.....and if you don’t rate stats.... well any remotely competent observer of batsmanship could see 100% that Lara was a class act and with his acheivments in the game, quite clearly "a legend"

Harder to get out yes, better....probably not. Although its closer than general opinion for sure.

I rate Lara, mainly because he was a very good player in a really average side. It must be hard to consistently perform under that sort of pressure, and he did. Tendulker, Ponting have always had a couple of other batsmen to put the team back on track if they fail, Lara did not have this luxury, aside from and often inconsistent Chanderpaul.

Well, my point is I think he's overrated because he's recent, and a lot of his best efforts were in ridiculously helpful conditions. Bradman probably would've scored 1000 on some of those pitches.

But as I said, I do still rate him... just not in the top 5 or 10 of all time like some people seem to.

As for the team, I think they should stick to the one that played NSW. With Vetorri at 7 we've got enough batsmen (if they perform), and I think we're really going to want 5 bowlers. Adding another batsmen would be a defensive move, and I'd rather see us go down in flames than play for a draw (or even just try to avoid an innings loss).
