Looks like Ponting will be out of the first match with a slow over rate ban.

Might even things up a little bit... (not that we have a chance, of course)

normally i would agree, but NZ has said they're treating this like a test match, since they've had so little cricket...

ok, so you would expect them to step it up a bit for the real test, but it doesn't bode well...

our only chance of not getting utterly thrashed is to put their top order under pressure... but not sure we have anything like the penetration to do that

Hate a technique-less wogger like Hayden, or a cheat like Gilly, but not a perfectly technical player like Punter

Lara - no way... most over-hyped batsmen of all time... modern great? maybe... all time great? not even close. Tendulker I could live with...

I respect Ponting because of his grit and determination... he's mentally one of the strongest players in recent times. And he is technically very good

But back to NZ... Ryder and McCullum in doubt for the first test, plus we're struggling against NSW... Sad

Lara overhyped? WTF? Dude you are on crack.

Or is an average of 52.8, a strikerate of nearly 70 and nearly 12000 runs in tests including a high score of 400 not considered great anymore?

Gilchrist is an overhyped batsman, Lara is a legend.

so they play test matches in the world cup now?
[quote]
The one thing about the modern greats - Tendulkar, Lara, and Ponting - is that they've faced shit bowling.

Someone like Geoff Boycott, who only averaged 47, but had to face some astonishing attacks... might go up the list when you factor that in
[quote]
Australia will most likely give us a hiding.

The best cricket this year was watching Aussie vs. India, the Aussies were beaten comprehensively in that series and I see the Indians are now dealing to England...
[quote]
The other thing is, stats don't tell the full story. How many of Lara's "great" innings were played in tame draws? How many times did he actually win a game? That's far more important than scoring 400 not out on a track that's harder than concrete

I'm not saying he was crap, I'm just saying he wasn't as great as some people made out, and I think with time that will be recognised by most people

Lara would have faced some great bowlers in his time. Akram, Younis, Warne, McGrath.

Granted the pitches would have been a bit more batsman friendly.

[quote]
Yeah its juist a weird post Mutant, not really like you at all to come up with such complete bollix. Confused IIRC Lara broke the world record for a test innings twice, did the same for a 1st class innings, including the incredible heights of hitting 500*, average of 53 in test cricket in a pretty terrible West Indies team.....and if you don’t rate stats.... well any remotely competent observer of batsmanship could see 100% that Lara was a class act and with his acheivments in the game, quite clearly "a legend" Cool

Boycs was better
[quote]
Harder to get out yes, better....probably not. Although its closer than general opinion for sure.
[quote]
I rate Lara, mainly because he was a very good player in a really average side. It must be hard to consistently perform under that sort of pressure, and he did. Tendulker, Ponting have always had a couple of other batsmen to put the team back on track if they fail, Lara did not have this luxury, aside from and often inconsistent Chanderpaul.
[quote]
Well, my point is I think he's overrated because he's recent, and a lot of his best efforts were in ridiculously helpful conditions. Bradman probably would've scored 1000 on some of those pitches.

But as I said, I do still rate him... just not in the top 5 or 10 of all time like some people seem to.
[quote]
The Maestro said:

v Australia 1964-1981 38 71 9 2945 191 47.50 7 14 3 view innings
v India 1967-1982 13 22 3 1084 246* 57.05 4 2 0 view innings
v West Indies 1966-1981 29 53 5 2205 128 45.93 5 15 4 view innings

So, vs some fantastic Aussie attacks, the best Indian spin attacks of all time, and the devastating windies... he averaged more than 45...

Cf. who Lara has faced (apart from Aus)

Who knows Neil. The weather is going to play a big part in the outcome of this game and it could well end up that way for either team, depending on when it rains.

If we win, it certainly won't be for the skill of our batsmen but the skill of our bowlers exploiting the conditions. You never know...

Yes, well, I think this sums up the life of a NZ cricket supporter pretty well:

http://www.stuff.co.nz/stuff/dominionpost/4761415a6483.html

Irrational hope, a strong stomach for humiliation, and the ability to enjoy the brief (and usually insignificant) moments when we play well are all essential qualities. Fortunately, Test cricket allows you to take your time going through this emotional rollercoaster.

As for the team, I think they should stick to the one that played NSW. With Vetorri at 7 we've got enough batsmen (if they perform), and I think we're really going to want 5 bowlers. Adding another batsmen would be a defensive move, and I'd rather see us go down in flames than play for a draw (or even just try to avoid an innings loss).

No passionate Black Caps supporter is unaware of the realistic view of where they stand in the scheme of things. Especially when facing up to a pissed off Australia in a test match at the Gabba.

Wow i so hope we can drag ourselves up to a decent lead today, was listening to the Aussie commentators when Aus was 180-8 talking about "how big a 1st innings lead Australia would have" Un fucking real. Neutral Fuck you Healy and co!
[quote]
yeh, those Aussie commentators, as much as i love them, have become bigger cocks every year. Its time for our top order to fire, i'm optimistic, and with Jessie taking a couple of wickets yesterday i have a feeling he will be in a good space. Mills is not half the player he was last year, dropping him might get him into some form, he was poor in Bangladesh tbh.
[quote]
I can stand most of them apart from Healy. Only caught about 10 mins this morning, but had already had enough of his BS by then.
[quote]
Mills doesn't get movement in the air, Southee does, I think that's why he was selected ahead of him.

Yeah Healy was being a right cock yesterday, only positive thing he had to say about the Black Caps was about McCullums catching.
