do they purposely make their sets uber-boring on they're on air?

I've noticed it with a couple of techno djs that their live sets rock, but their essential mixes on radio 1 are shite.....

and listened to a couple of Hernan Cattaneo's sets on his radio show, and just about keeled over with boredom Neutral

It is quite hard to get a good vibe when you stand in a recording room and try to make a mix. Maybe that's the thing.

On the same note many sets which I've heard live which I thought went off sounded pretty average when I listened to the recording later on CD.. Without the party vibe things are so different.

I tend to play more minimal/ambient/slow/deep tunes when either playing by myself or on radio, and save the bigger/funkier more party oriented tunes for the clubs. Others im sure would do similar...

*moment of sarcasm*.... yeah, lets make a 5pm set on a friday afternoon in the UK on the commercial radio be as bangin as possible to alienate all listeners... hmmm, yes, thats what everyone needs to hear whilst stuck in traffic on the M25...

essential mixes are just a way of getting their name into the non-clubbers eyes for commercial purposes IMHO

if you want bangin radio sets with all the anthems, come to dubai... that'll get your fix that'll keep you awake...

also..... i wonder if (more sarcasm) it could be partly a case being a touch intoxicated in some form when listening to them live in a club, compared to not being in that state whilst listening to a radio set??

so many factors.... end of the day... essential mix isnt underground radio, get over it... if you want underground, listen to proton radio or something like that.

It's prog. Exactly how many "anthems" can you possibly get? You can play a nice bouncy set without making it a "peaktime" set as such.

P.S - I've been off my rocker at Summadayze and I could still tell that Nick Warren played a good set whereas Roger Sanchez deserved to be shot. Razz

I checked out one of Hernan's kiss fm sets recently as well and I agree, bored me shitless. But I think it was because they had an ad break every 20 minutes or so. Pretty hard to get a groove going with only 3 or 4 tracks.

Anyway, I think some of these dj's think of the radio as away of simply showcasing tunes that they are digging at the moment as opposed to actually dropping a mean set.

no suprise there, sanchez is only about image and b/s nob twiddling, a pair of arse cheeks could deliver a more realistic non-commercial set than him
