Looking at a cheap netbook (unrelated to the mac wifi thread).

Main use is banking while travelling, email, skype and storing photos.

At the moment im leaning towards the HP with win7 starter.

but the Asus and Toshibas are quite similar in spec and price.... then theres the Acers for even cheaper.

Any recommendations?

Have the 1st HP netbook that came (mininote 2133 i think) and while it's well built, ours did suffer a motherboard failure, i suspect from overheating thanks to user error.

we got next day onsite service for it though which was nice. I'd still HP buy again.

heard good things about the Toshibas as usual, they seem really well put together. The Asus and Acers still feel cheap to me, so it's worth going to a retail store and try wrapping your hands around each one to see which you like best. apart from the obvious spec differences, most of them have all the same/similar hardware inside anyway.

Got 8x Dell Inspiron 2100's coming soon, which be able to gove you a review on them when they get in. We're paying around $725 ex GST with Ubuntu and 3 Year Pro Care.

I have an Asus1000h and its been rock solid. Running Win7 Enterprise without an issue. Battery life is awesome also (6 cell instead of the paltry 3 cell)

Right, have a HP Mini with touch screen. processor is arse on win7 pro - it took about 3 hours for it to be ready to turn on. I really wish they would let it install all its shit before shipping it or let you avoid installing all the crapware. It took me another 2 hours to uninstall the shit and install what i wanted. Still seriously considering reinstalling from scratch with just the win7 disk + drivers.

got 7 hours battery life out of it today so m happy about that. The touch screen I thought would be a waste of time but has come in useful, well moreso than i expected as the touch pad is less than fantastic.

Currently filling it up with about 300 gigs of media so will see how it handles HD Stuff shortly.
