If money wasn't an option? I think you really need to narrow that down a bit. Is this for a home desktop? What are your storage requirements etc?

I am buying Seagate SATA 160GB and 200GB drives every week 8MB cache, 160GB is best bang for buck, well... actually maybe 120 is still... but I already use over 120GB

yea it is but i only have ide drives
i think what makes the huge difference though is the 8mb cache apposed to the 2mb, it is so much faster.

i agree thechad, 120 is still best value at $1 GB, i think the 160gb are only like $180 though? i still got my old 80gb hdd's but just bought a 200gb which is sooo much nicer

well speed wise every benchmark i have seen shows them as being around the same or a minuit bit faster. show me something different and i wont argue

I'm with Pervert. Not much difference unless you get a HDD doing 10 000rpm and with an 8mb cache.

Having said that, I'm puttin' together a SATA RAID at the moment, just 'cos. I'm a sucker for nice cables.

Go the seagate drives... I've never had any problems with them... I'm also putting together a x2 SATA 120gig hdd setup.

get two of those in raid0 and you should be flying

or get scsi raid0/1 or 5.

They are all pretty much the same these days eh. Some of the cheaper ones slow down more when they get full but not by a great deal.

something to consider is warranty. it use to be 3 years was standard, not any more.

if you're buying from Ascent.co.nz then you can pay a bit more for one with a 3 year warranty. At least they do that with the Seagate drives.

I personally use Maxtor cos I've had good luck with them in the past but some people havent and choose to stay clear.

ive had an ibm, samsung, seagate, and WD fail on me in the past 18 months - there was a class action suit against the company that made the latters so i think its something that covers all manufacturers.

i would get either western digital / seagate, cant go wrong with 3 year warranties on their drives now

for music production i would get 2 x 120gb / 160gb SATA 8m cache drives raided for extra performance
