So as my last Thread in the "DanceNet" i got hammered by all the Aucklanders posting there threads dising all us welli's, pushing my lil thread down n down.
As i want to bring up the topic again, hopefuly this time it wont get neglected again as the number of welli members have increased!

Ohh and also the best Venue to hold a Dance event.

Phoenix because of all the different types of place to dance, different views, different angles etc

Studio for the class acts
Cumberland for size
Vespa for chillin'
Concrete for startin'

I think Jeff's got it /sorted/. I pretty much agree. The acoustics in Stud9 are great for DnB and breaks. But the steps at Phoenix are trippy, make it more interesting - and I love the lounge seats upstairs by the bar, which is nearly always going off as well. The NineBar doesn't tend to have as much dancing going on... maybe it's because the tables are in the corner of the room rather than the centre of a wall? I dunno. That aspect is better at Phoenix though.

What's the story with Tattoo these days? I haven't been there before myself, but it used to go off, didn't it?

Still goes off at times but is starting to get the early norning seedy thing going on with the strippers from the nearby strip bars making it their destination after work and the seedy drunks following them. But when there is a good crowd and vibe in there its aaaalllgood

yup true back in the days Tatau went off big time, walk down stairs it was kinda like Blade, but nowa days its pretty sad. I reakon they should hold a big Dance Party there i mean the venues big enough and maybe it'l get its name back and start rocking again.

Yay!! This is great, finally a Wellie board!! Phoenix is definitely the best for atmosphere. I can't get into Stu9 in a big way for some reason. I have never had a truly fantastic time there and find it a bit of a strange place with that funny bit with the seats round to the right of the bar. STILL haven't been to cumberland so can't comment. Go phoenix!!! And the door guys there are superb.

SubNine needs a lot of work done to it for it to be proper club environment. It still looks like an old mans pokie bar in there . . . one time when they had visuals going I was half-expecting TAB results to pop up! The booth needs to be moved as well cos the accoustics really are suffering. . .

I totally agree Pseuro. I'll never forget how disappointed I was when it opened with Roger Sanchez last Xmas, the sound system sounded just so bloody bad, there are no good areas to sit in when you're not dancing, it really needs some imagination. It's not just about money, it's just a lack of energy put into making it better than just a concrete bunker.

Heavenly: Are you a trance/HH chick? (I assume you're a chick!) Phoenix focusses on that end of the dance spectrum much more heavily from what I can see, whereas Stud9 takes more of the house, DnB and 2-step garage etc. Just as a general rule. The market is well big enough for the both of them seeing they server different markets.

I tend to agree with you guys that Sub9 is undeveloped and is kinda seedy. It feels a tad too underground and not very stylish eh? Having said that, I had a damn good night there at Around the House with Greg Churchill not so long ago. I'm sure they could do more with some areas of it, perhaps put some bench seating along some areas near the walls that are around the edge of the d-floor.

When I'm not dancing I always head outside and sit on the walls eh. Or wander down to StarMart.

Voiceinsideyou: Yip more of a hardhouse chick, not so much trance. But also love house. Actaully the best time I have had at St9 was at round the house - that was a brillant night, but more than the music it is the whole atmosphere and I totally agree withpseuro that it is jist a little too seedy for my liking. Also I often find the chillout area is just not chilled out enough and too small - sometimes, when i'm not dancing I find myself just sitting in the corridor, which isn't that much fun, although I do spend a lot of time outside on the wall as well

Yeah, i'e done a couple of the Around the House's, both really good. One was just in Stud9, and the other with GregC was in Sub9 as well - very, very cool.

The chill-out area is really part of the dancefloor it's so close... it's doesn't really feel so chilled out as the sound is right there in your face, which has its good and bad sides.

I'm all for lil walks outside to cool off though, and sitting on the wall. And inspecting the crazy fucked up roof of the place next door with all those missing tiles!

I think that in Welli another cool club which I like to hang out at is Vespa Lounge just for its chilled out atmosphere :b

Actually I had huge amounts of fun down stairs at jet that new bar on Cplace last Friday - just chilling - almost as good a vibe for chillin as Vespa has.

Jet Lounge "as chillin as Vespa" I should bloody well hope so as its owned by two guys who in part used to own Vespa.
Haven't really had a chance to sit down and have a drink in there yet but from popping in and having a look it looks kinda cool though the ceiling going into the pool room is a little to low for my liking.

Haven't been to Phoenix in some time, nothing personal, just seems to work out that way.
Tatou - the night my mate and I both broke up with our g/f and b/f and had a great deal of fun. But it's gone downhill a lot, too many drug busts and dregs of Courtenay Place.

Studionine would be my fav club, Phoenix for the bigger nites, and the Starlight for the real big ones!

Agreed, Sub9/Stud9 would be my favourite too, confirmed by last night's excellent Sandwiches. I like the variety, but maybe I'm biased. I've only been to hard house, NRG and Trance at Phoenix, which isn't as diverse as the house -> 2-step -> breaks -> Dnb -> Dub that I've done at Stud9. Maybe I just haven't witnessed the right stuff at Phoenix.....!

I maintain: Phoenix = too close to Courtney Place, and can attract the piss heads. It's also more populist in what it plays. Not that that's a bad thing, but it means less varity.

Studio/Sub 9, nicely tucked away. If you mention them, a lot of people don't even know where they are, whereas everyone knows phoenix. S9 is also much more cutting edge. I've seen everything there, from live jazz to house to DnB to trance to hip hop to progressive. The most diverse venue in Wellington I think.

yea sounds like a good idea but it'l cost them too much for delivering the sound, plus i reakon the place is to open and the sound waves will travel too far and cause more problems then it is.
but if they fix that shit up i reakon it'l be a preety sweet as place to have a dance party.

Karori\'s a bus ride away, but no, not too bad. Phoenix and Studio9/Sub9 (the S9s are at the same \'place\') are the \'main\' dance clubs I suppose, Phoenix tends to have more trance and hard house, Stud9 has more house, 2step garage, DnB and some other stuff.

I\'m disgusted that Banga even mentioned the grand, sportscafe etc. Euuck. All shitty pop music played on half-assed stereo systems, populated by intoxicated people with attitudes. Just to stereotype excessively, of course.

The Biggie meets haven\'t been really well organised in Wgtn up until now really, but it\'s getting there! I\'m not sure when one might be happening in Feb, but I\'m sure something will be happening.

The Sports cade has one of the BEST setup in wellington its just that they play CRAP on it. Most of the lighting and sound techies in town are jealous of what the Sports Cafe have at thier disposal
