Battlefield 3 beta out now.

Ok, so for those who give a fuck, the much anticipated BF3 open beta was d/l'ed on to my ps3 last night, and.....it's pretty good.
The level they have let us see, is an unfortunately bad representation of what to expect, as it's an in your face urban environment (a-la Call of Duty)
so no vehicles or destructible buildings, and no jets to hear the much boasted about "sonic booms".
It seems to be quite buggy, but being a beta Im sure this is to be expected. The actual game play is very smooth (when its not glitching), with an overwork of all the classes (assault and medic have been combined).
The join game area is very fast, and appears to have all the normal game modes available. Very slick graphics (still not next gen in my view, and only 720dpi, which is a let down really when 1080dpi should now be the norm). Dust, smoke and debris look very nice, and the textures and skins look pretty good too.

The full game comes out next month, and with extra maps available for free if you pre-order.

Oh yeah I saw this in the PS3 shop yesterday, I think it comes out around the 15th yeah??

What I dont get, is why release a beta so close to the full release date? Im aware its an open beta but still.

I'd suggest that the open beta is probably more of a sales tool than a testing exercise, hence why so close to the full release.

can one play as a Mentor?

You can play as a dog if you want.. all you do is get down on your hands and knees and try to sniff or lick the enemy as much as you can. If someone throws a grenade in your direction.. chase it.. thats what dogs do. Also.. remember to bark a lot excitedly.
