More importantly, can anyone honestly say that if this case was about a woman killing her husband after that kind of abuse, that she would've been given the same punishment, because I seriously doubt it.

There most definitely is. Abuse is abuse, regardless of gender.
I actually made a crack about this case to S_Y who works in the violence prevention field and she filled me in on how common some of those abuses really are. It is eye opening.
No it hasn't changed, BWS is not a recognized defence in NZ and no woman who suffered from BWS and murdered the abuser has escaped conviction on account of BWS in NZ, that I'm aware of.
