I have a bunch of avi files that are a bit too big for this project i'm working on.

I need a (preferrably free) software that can decrease the file size. I'm assuming if I removed the audio and made the files more low res, this will do the trick.

Any ideas of some software that can do this? I d/loaded some apps by googling the problem and none of them really did what I wanted.

avi is just a container.

inside an avi can be many different things. for example, it can be a divx, an xvid, motion jpeg etc etc

so all you do to get it smaller is change the format of the file that is in the container.

google gspot to find out what it is

and then download super to convert it

just google gspot and super

note though, that change the format of what's inside the container might affect where/what system you can play it on.

You won't have a problem if you're using VLC player, but with other media players you'll have to have the right codec installed on the computer

I'm going to be playing them in an experiment coded in presentation which (apparently) can play any video as long as the required codecs are installed.

will try it when i get home, cheers dude Smile

the problem is the ISI between videos is only 500ms so there's a small delay in loading each video (10-30ms for each video). The cumulative lag ends up really fucking up the synchronisation with the scanner by the end of each run Crying or Very sad

if there is no audio the you can change the avi into a bunch of jpegs or something and flash them up one after the other. that might work.

i'm only done reaction time stuff with presentation and video, so it loads up the video and then when it starts playing it marks the start of the trial. Not sure how it'll work for sending triggers etc.

For MEG we have a photo detector, so the when stuff appears on the screen it actually sends the trigger.

It's a blocked design so the time to repetition of teh scanner is 2 seconds. So the start of the videos should coincide with the start of the scan. And it starts off like that, but by the end of the run it's about 500ms out.

I'll have a look at it tonight and try make it work.

It's not even my experiment ffs! Razz

hey, off topic, but slight related.

I saw donna was coming over for a talk at the end of the month. do you know what she's talking about? and is she supervising sarina

she'll prolly be talking about episodic memory and imagining/planning the future recruiting common neural substrates Smile

Not sure regarding Sarina.

Remind me when she's nearly there -- I want you to ask her a question for me after her talk Razz
