the 3 news thread on fb was amusing. some chch people turn it into a dick size competition. some auckland people get offended at the lack of sympathy. tv3 gets surprised and pulls the thread. *sigh*
"The largest earthquake known to have affected the Auckland region was a magnitude-6.0 jolt centred near the mouth of the Waikato River on June 24, 1891.
It brought down a chimney in Auckland's Onehunga district, but otherwise caused only minor damage to fragile items and plasterwork."
I go down to Chch quite a bit for work and haven't felt an aftershock once, so it wast a tiny bit thrilling for the 2 seconds it lasted :>
The #eqnz feed was... interesting. Some funny jokes about spilt coffee etc but mostly the Cantabs were behaving like children. Or I guess like hard-done-by small townies with a JAFA complex
Wellingtons one wasnt that big, if I hadnt been sitting still I dont think I would have even felt it. Though, everyone seems to be hailing it as fairly decent. We obviously havent had one for a while.

I like the Geonet (or someone) guy who said "it was below the plate so will have been absorbed by the volcanic field". Oh yays, that sounds wonderful, earthquake energy being absorbed into a volcanic field!
