How long did it take you to venture out of the comfortable bedroom into the scary world of mixing in public? Were you confidant about your abilities, or did you blag it? Any embarrassing moments out front?

wtf?

Just played my first gig last night outa my room, was not to nervous cause playing to a crowd that had never really been exposede to the music before, so was like, if they don't feel the music don't give a fuck cause they're not ready for it.
Actually went really well I had a blast and the punters enjoyed it, looked like it any way. Had a couple of warts come up, one guy handed me a CD and said if you run outa tunes I made this RnB mix today- told him politely to F off and threw his CD on the floor. Had a blast though.

I've only had my turntables for around 2 months now and along with that, I've collected a few vinyls..
I've gotta say, its been one of the best investment I've ever down...
How offen was I playing a CD and listening to how the DJ mixes in one track into another - I was so frustrating knowing that all you could do was just skip from one track to another on the CD player
....
I'm still at an early stage ,but I have now a far greater respect for the DJ's who go out there and blend tracks into each other, making them sound so smooth... - not only them but also all you Bedroom DJ's who spend hours using your creative musical imgination and skills to do what keeps most of us sane.

I'm obviously a long way away from playing at my first gig..... but the best of luck to the rest of you guys who have or are going out shortly to do there first one.

what kinda article? Don't really think I could contribute to greatly cause only just really started. But if you want photo shoot from clubs in NYC I could sort that out for ya mag?
Peace.

See my post on buying decks Baynsey....I hate that and is one of my main reasons for wanting decks. I love playing music to people....but having to remove/insert new cd just doesn't seem the ideal

My first gigs were like, parties, 21st's, shit like that. They went really well, albeit they were rather cheesy selections to suit the taste. Even ended up throwing down a lot of hip hop. I get bad nerves, but once you're happy with one or two mixes it becomes as easy as at home - And you start to learn how to move a large crowd. Important.

a friend of mine got some decks about 5 weeks ago which ive been using as much as i can. i played my first "gig" at my cousins 30th last weekend, while i consider myself to still be in the bedroom, it wont be long!

=)

hey rubberchicken - what the article for...not real
groove is it?
[quote]
Well....I still dont own any decks of my own.....but
3 weeks after my DJ mates in Wellington threw
me onto the decks to give it a shot at a sunday
rinse out.....I was playing to about 80 (I think)
people at Phoenix lounge bar in Wellington.....
Maybe I can go to Guiness with that??
But in alll honesty.....A combination of your
natural ability, who u know, and your tune
collection, all effect how quickly u can get out in
the clubs....
Its different for everyone....I have a freind who is
really good, but is not playing out at all.....he
would be one of the better progressive Dj's I
have heard.....

Here's a suggestion for all you Dj wannabes. Before you go charging out into town with your 20 records to play for a crowd on K rd for $20. I think that you should make sure that you have all the rudimentary skills. How many times have you been out and listened to a dj who just doesn't have a clue? Do you want to be one of them? If you go to a club and a local dj is better than you go home and practise, because if he can be bothered putting in the effort to be as good as he/she can be for the crowd, shouldn't you too. You should not try and learn what your doing while playing out think of the punters having to listen to you figure out what your doing. I've been djing for 3 years and I still don't think I'm good enough. I am not having a go at anyone here it's just my opinion.

Hey assidious, not real groove, remix are keen for it.

Hey 'Touch'...
Perhaps one or two of the posts here are a little over the kilter.... But apart from one post on here, I can't imagine anyone else wanting to go out and display there skills until they felt they were at least 95% confident with what they were doing..
some of us do go to clubs not only to dance etc...but we also watch the DJ play and try and learn from him/her....for all we know, that DJ could be you that we watch and try and learn from. So just have a little more understanding...
[quote]
95% is a pretty high figure. I've seen djs play without any skill whatsoever, ie I went to Home last year in London and they had a house dj they had imported from USA. after fucking up 4 mixes in a row he stopped bothering and tried to blend them instead which he also sucked at all the while he was being photographed for posterity, I've seen the same thing here numerous times. It's easy to understand you get new decks and it's all very exciting so you line up to play out as soon as you can. Anyway fuck `understanding' because if I sucked when I play out I would expect the people to throw me off, especially if the punters paid.
