am looking at towing 1600kg plus and am having trouble getting a straight answer from anywhere i phone. they just say to phone the ltsa for the regulations. thing is i am just wanting to know if this car will be able to tow. i know it may not be good on the motor or what ever. its a mazda mpv, its a 3 something litre diesel. do diesels have to be turbo to tow? any advice greatly appreciated

any diesel is good for towing, but 1600kg may be a bit too much for your mazda to handle. you may blow a clutch or your automatic gearbox. as for being legal to tow that much? i dont think it matters as long as your load is secure and your trailer has a warrant....

Your towbar should have a label on it stating what it is rated too, as it should be a certified towbar.

You could be able to tow more if your trailor is braked too.

What are you towing that is 1600Kgs? Razz

Get a braked trailor (Less force when you put the brakes on, doesn't feel like much of a load - most braked trailors are well over 2-2500kg loads) and you will have no probs..The Mazda will pull it easily Smile

It should having towing capacities in the car manual but as a general 3litre diesels (especially the turbo diesels) are great for towing, just need to check the trailer, is it braked or not etc.

I know my car on a trailer would weigh about 1600kg

on long trips or if doing it often you need a transmission cooler fitted otherwise the trans will wear out really fast.

cool thanks for all the info. i know about needing a cooler but it is not a turbo

The 1600 kg is a horse and a float. car does not have a tow bar on it as yet, but if we decide to put one on it, it will be a very heavy duty one. But no matter what tow bar we put on it, we still need to know about how the car will handle the weight. I looked on the aa site and apparently it can happily tow 1200kg braked but i would like to know if it is unsafe to tow more, or if it is just going to wear the engine quicker?
Am not too worried about running the car down, but would like my horse to be safe. Smile

1600kg is also the weight of your average ATM cash machine.
