Well, I've done it, I've booked my Ireland flights. This will be my 4th working holiday (well 3rd if you don't count the first failed Canada attempt), hehe.

I'm going to go to Galway. Anyone know anyone living over there? I know how hard it is to go somewhere to live with no friends there so I'm a bit worried but excited too because I'm daring to think it might all work out. <touches wood>.

The getting set up with a tax number sounds like a bit of a nightmare and having to decide whether to go through one of those companies that sets you up with a limited company if a bit of a drama (and trying to figure out if I even need to do that). And the bank account thing's just as bad as setting up a UK bank account, except there's no way you can set one up from overseas! Bah.

I know some VERY cool irish/kiwi boys. They are a bit mad, but super lovely and fun. They mostly live in Dublin, and a smaller town half an hour from there (cannot remember the name right now)

I am sure that they wouldn't mind me passing on their info to you... particularly if you are hot and single :p

Hahahhaa Very Happy

Galway is cool, but it's a bit too quiet and small for my tastes. Although the Irish girls loved the noviety of a kiwi boy in their town Wink

I like quiet towns after living in Jasper in Canada with a population of about 3000. It was nice and everyone knew each other. Dunno how easy it's going to be to find IT work in Galway though.

I'm single but not looking.. well, I guess you never know. My mum says you meet people when you're not looking! I'm not planning on stopping in Dublin, just getting straight on the bus to Galway but if it all turns to custard I might cruise by on my way back home.. can you please PM me their email address(es) if they don't mind me having them? Just in case, I guess it's better to have them and not need them, than need them and not have them. Like a condom Wink

I've got a few friends in Northern Ireland (seriously), which is apparently a quite nice place now. If your heading there, PM me and ill let them know your coming and swap emails.

Hope your travels are going well! Wave :C

I've been to Northern Ireland on holiday and I liked it, there's heaps of cool touristy things to see up there. Unfortunately to work in Northern Ireland you need a UK working holiday visa.. which I've already done so I can't get another one. Stink. I'll only be able to work in the Republic of Ireland on an Irish working holiday visa.

Which town do they live in?

Hi,

I've been in Ireland since last October last year, although i'm in Dublin.
The PPS numer (tax number) isn't too hard to get, all you'll need is proof of address. For this I used a letter from my employer basically just saying I was employeed and where I lived.. they accepted this no problem. They'll also say it'll take about 2 weeks for your number to come through, however mine only took about two days.
Bank account is a differant story though.. absolute pain to setup. To get an account setup you need two bills in your name proving your address.. which is quite hard if you've just arrived in the country. My advice is to get your PPS number first, then attempt to get a bank account setup as the letter you get with your PPS number is probably the best (and easiest) proof of address you can get. FYI - I'm with the Bank of Ireland, and once I did have all the proof I needed they were fairly decent, my account was setup the same day which was grand, although I did have issues getting my laser card (get one of these btw - they're basically an eftpos card and can save you from the loooong queues for the ATMs as you can just get 'cashback' when making a purchase!) but I think this was more time of year relatedd (was around xmas/new years time).

In regards to IT work in Galway.. All I know is that Hewlett Packard's European software devision are based there (I'm contracted to them, so I'm in Galway every so often). They seem to take on a lot of contract staff and seem to treat their employees fairly well, so that's one place I'd suggest you try.
In regards to websites.. www.monster.ie and www.jobs.ie are the two I used, used to get calls on a daily basis.

Oh, and you won't need to setup a company or anything unless you're contracting.. (which is quite likely if you're on a 1 year visa). I wouldn't worry about it, if you go through a recruitment agency they'll sort you out.

Ireland's great fun to live in, you'll enjoy it. Oh, and Galway is mainly a university town.. so expect lots (even in Irish terms) of drinking.

I think that's enough for now.. if you want to query anything just hit me up with a pm.
