If so what do you do? Im not curently in the automotive industry but plan to make it my career in the next few months. Still considering going back to tech for automotive courses. I plan to run my own shop eventually, have studied business, marketing and entreprenurship so sorted there, but will most likely need a bit of paper thats says I know how to undo bolts etc

Best to score a apprenticeship at a larger garage. I started by Grooming Cars at my local Nissan Dealer and Lo and Behold 8 months later Im in the Parts Dept making a shitload for the company, unfortunately Im only a parts Jr so none of those big bucks trickle back to me!, another few years though and I could be the 2ic, you just have to lick balls to get there Smile
Good luck bro! If you're a whiz with a spanner and have smallish hands for the V6 engines etc etc then you should be sweet!

An apprenticeship would be the way to go but I dont have the time to run one out and im making too much money as a sales rep to take a big drop in pay, my perfect job at the moment would be to work at Nissan or Mazda as a parts rep (more to do with the staff discounts and job satisfaction than for any other reason) Nismo stuff is awesome but a rip off i.e. $6000 for a Nismo Carbon fibre bonnet, I can get a bonnet the same quality for $2000.

Im not too bad with cars as I am now, its helps when your best mates are 2 tradesman engineers, 2 panel beaters, a car painter and a mechanic so conversation is always cars and I've learnt a heck of a lot Pitcrewing for a Mazda Pro7 e.g. race car suspension set up - if you wanna know how to make ur car handle talk to me!. Don't think I need to be a trademan but it would be nice to get a couple of certificates under my belt, I really need to do a good welding course, I know the theory (used to sell welders) and have done a little but I'd like a welding cert because I really like all the fabrication possiblities, e.g. Intercooler, intake and exhaust fabrication etc

I can work a spanner but unfortunately lack the small hands.. Working on my skyline is a !@#$, half the reason im getting a rotary lol a lot easier to work on, what other engine can 3 idiots remove a complete engine from an engine bay without any aids such as an engine crane - not recommended but very possible and easy

Go for it, if cars make u happy then deffinately do it, I have a goal to be working in the automotive industry this year, I hate my current job not because it isn't easy, just because it has nothing to do with cars so im not that interested.

I have been working in the US for almost 2 years in the automotive business. Pity I am not too much into cars like I was when I started at Uni.

I work for company that is an independent automotive design studio. My company is basically hired by the major manufacturers to build their latest concept cars. Was cool at first....looking to move into something different. A job doing military vehicle R&D would be sweet.

That sounds like a wicked job, is it just American car companies or others?

Basically any one of the major manufacturers that has a design studio in Southern California. Japanese, European and American. I don't like the fact alot of the final products we produce are about form and not function. Alot is all show and no go. Concept cars are very conceptual...even with regards to the fact of whether they are drivable or not.
